The SheBelieves Cup 2016 for women's national football teams was the first edition of this tournament series and took place between March 3 and 10, 2016 in the USA . Participants were, with world champions and hosts USA, European champions Germany and France, the top three teams of the Algarve Cup 2015 and England as the winner of the Cyprus Cup 2015 . For Germany and France it was also an important preparation on the way to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , for which both were the second and third best European teams at the 2015 World Cupwhereas England, as the best European team in the World Cup, but not eligible to compete in the Olympic Games , wanted to use the tournament as preparation for the further qualifying games for the 2017 European Championship . The tournament was the highest-attended invitation tournament of the year and took place at the same time as the Algarve Cup 2016 , which was held for the first time since 2001 with only eight teams and in which, apart from South American champions Brazil, no team from the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings took part in previous years the top teams had always participated.

The venues were the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , the Nissan Stadium in Nashville and the FAU Stadium in Boca Raton . All three stadiums are equipped with natural grass. The games took place as double events.

While the German and French players came out of the league operations that were interrupted for the tournament, the 2016 season in England and the USA had not yet started. However, the US national team qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in February , which they finished with five wins without conceding a goal.
