Edda Garðarsdóttir (born July 15, 1979 in Reykjavík ) is a former Icelandic football player . The midfielder played for the Icelandic national team from 1997 to 2013 and for various clubs in Iceland, Sweden and England until 2013.
Club career
Edda made her debut in 1992 at the age of 13 for the Icelandic club KR Reykjavík in the Icelandic league , for which she mostly played except for short trips to other clubs. In 1993, 1997, 1998 and 1999 she won the championship with KR and in 2005 with Breiðablik. She also won the "Bikarkeppni kvenna" cup competition in 1999, 2002, 2007 and 2008 with KR and in 2005 with Breiðablik. During the four seasons in Sweden she finished fifth with KIF Örebro three times in Damallsvenskan , but narrowly escaped relegation last season. She then moved to England where she only made five appearances at Chelsea and already in July 2013 after the EM 2013 she moved back to her home country to Valur, where she played her last league game on September 14, 2013 on the last match day of the season and was runner-up.
National team
Edda played her first international match on September 7, 1997 when Iceland played against Ukraine for the first time as part of the World Cup qualification and she came on in the 79th minute for Margrét Rannveig Ólafsdóttir , who was substituted in for the first time in this game. Before that, she had already played five internationals for the U-17s, one game for the U-19s and eight internationals for the U-21 teams, for which she also played other games after she was already a national player.
She was part of the squad at the 2009 European Women's Football Championship in Finland , for which Iceland was able to qualify for the first time, and was used in two games. The team was eliminated from the tournament without any points, but only lost 1-0 to Norway and Germany .
At the Algarve Cup 2011 she surprisingly reached the final with her team, but lost it to record winners USA . They had eliminated the former Algarve Cup winners China and Sweden in the group stage .
On March 11, 2013, she made her 100th international match at the 2013 Algarve Cup against the People's Republic of China as the second Icelander after record national player Katrín Jónsdóttir . After that she only played three more internationals. She played her last international match on June 1, 2013 in preparation for the European Championship against Scotland . But then she was not appointed to the squad for the EM 2013 .
