On the last day of the match, they missed direct qualification due to a 2-1 defeat in Norway and the Icelanders had to go to relegation, where they prevailed with two 3-2 victories against Ukraine and were the last team to qualify for the European Championship. European Championship finals

Iceland met Germany , the Netherlands in preliminary group B and, as in qualifying, Norway . Iceland also played against Germany and Norway at the last European Championship, but was eliminated as the bottom of the group, although they only lost 1-0 to both of them. This time it was enough against Norway even to a 1: 1 and thus the first point win at a European Championship finals. Against Germany they lost 3-0. A final 1-0 win against the Dutch women made it possible to win a game at a European Championship finals for the first time and to reach the quarter-finals as one of the two best thirds in the group, in which hosts Sweden were the opponents. After the 0: 4 Iceland was eliminated from the tournament. Captain Katrín Jónsdóttir , who played for the national team when her youngest team-mate was not born, then ended her career as a national player.
