Sara Björk started playing football at Haukar Hafnarfjörður at the age of six and played there until she was 18, but was unable to play for two years due to a knee injury she suffered in 2005. Then she moved to Icelandic record champions Breiðablik Kópavogur , who in the time she played there, but could not build on the successes of the past. In 2011 she moved to the Swedish Damallsvenskan to LdB FC Malmö , now (FC Rosengård), where she played with Anja Mittag from 2012 to 2015 and with Marta from 2014 . She scored 11 goals in her first season and became champion of the 2011 season . In the following seasons she scored fewer goals, but won the championship again in 2013 , 2014 and 2015 , ending the season with her 100th league game. She also won the Supercup in 2012 and 2015, with Mittag and Marta respectively scoring the decisive goals.

With Breiðablik she took part in the 2010/11 season as runner-up in the UEFA Women's Champions League and survived qualifying as the best runner-up in the group. In the sixteenth finals, they then lost both games against French runner-up Juvisy FCF .

Things went better with Malmo the following season when she reached the quarter-finals and was tenth-best goalscorer with several other players with five goals. In 2012/13 they failed again in the quarterfinals, this time to defending champion Olympique Lyon . In 2013/14, however , the trip ended in the round of 16 against eventual winners VfL Wolfsburg . Wolfsburg was also the final destination in the year after , this time in the quarter-finals, but only because of the away goal rule. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Wolfsburg, the second leg ended 3: 3, in which she scored the goal of the final score in a game with changing leaders in the third minute of stoppage time. Also in 2015/16 it was a German team, this time 1. FFC Frankfurt , that blocked their way in the quarter-finals, whereby a lost penalty shoot-out was responsible for the premature end. She had scored the only goal for Rosengård after the 1-0 home defeat in the second leg, but was the only player to miss on penalties. So far, she has played a total of 32 Champions League games in which she scored 13 goals. On May 2, 2016 Sara Björk announced her move to the German Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga at VfL Wolfsburg , where she signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2018. During her time at LdB FC , she played 61 times and 58 times for the successor club FC Rosengård . She extended her contract with VfL Wolfsburg until 2020.

After Sara had already completed international matches for the U-17 and U-19 national teams of Iceland, she came after healing of her knee injury on August 26, 2007 at the age of 16 in the 1: 2 defeat in Dravograd in the first game of the Icelanders against Slovenia their debut in the senior team came on when she three minutes before the end of the game. She immediately became a regular and was already in the starting line-up for the next game, the first group game at the 2008 Algarve Cup . Her first international goal she scored two days later in a 4-1 win against Ireland . As group winners of group C with the weaker teams they were allowed to play against Finland for 7th place and won 3-0. A year later she had to sit out for the first time in the third group game and the game for 5th place at the Algarve Cup 2009 , but in the first group game with two goals she almost alone achieved the first win against the Norwegians , who then scored an own goal for their 1 : Contributed 3 defeat. After that, it was missing until today (as of April 12, 2016) only four times, only for one game each time.

In 2009 she took part in a European Championship finals for the first time with the Icelanders and was used in the three group games. The Icelanders lost the three games, but against runner-up European champions Norway and defending champions Germany only just 0: 1, making them the team that conceded the fewest goals against eventual European champions Germany. In qualifying for the 2011 World Cup , they only lost the two games against the strengthened French women , who then finished fourth at the World Cup. On September 17, 2009, in their first game against Estonia, they achieved the highest win in their international history with a 12-0 win, to which Sara also contributed a goal. As second in the group they missed the subsequent play-off games.

The next high point in her career was reaching the 2011 Algarve Cup final against the USA , which was lost 2: 4 after a 2-1 lead.

The Icelanders qualified for the 2013 European Championship finals in second place behind Norway with two 3-2 wins in the play-off games against Ukraine . At the final round, like four years earlier, they were drawn into a group with defending champions Germany and Norway. The third opponent this time was the Netherlands , against whom the only victory came. With a draw against Norway they were the best third in the group despite the defeat against the German team and thus reached the quarter-finals. But here they lost 4-0 against hosts Sweden .

When team captain Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir had to take a break due to her pregnancy, Sara was appointed interim captain by the new national coach Freyr Alexandersson in 2014.

In qualifying for the 2015 World Cup , they failed as the worst runners-up in the group and had to let Switzerland go to their first World Cup participation. In contrast, it went better in qualifying for the 2017 European Championship . Although they were only in second place after four games without losing points and without conceding a goal, in the end Iceland prevailed as group first with seven wins and one defeat, with the direct comparison (4: 0 and 1: 2) against the Scottish women with equal points was the deciding factor.

At the EM , she led her team in the three group matches as captain on the field. But they couldn't get a point and were eliminated as the last group.

She had seven appearances in qualifying for the 2019 Women's World Cup . They were able to win a game against Germany for the first time, but in the end they missed the finals as fifth-best runner-up in the group.

With 20 international goals, Sara is in sixth place in the list of goalscorers for Icelanders.
