qualification

Harpa Þorsteinsdóttir , top scorer in qualification

Iceland was drawn for qualification in Group 1 and met Scotland, Slovenia and Belarus as well as Macedonia for the first time . The Icelanders started with a 2-0 win against Belarus, with Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir making their 100th international match. A 4-0 win against Macedonia was followed by a 6-0 win against Slovenia, in which Hólmfríður Magnúsdóttir also made their 100th international match. The next four games were won without conceding a goal, including a 4-0 win against the toughest rivals Scotland. With that, participation in the European Championship was certain even before the last game and in the last game against the Scottish women it was all about winning the group. Although the home game was lost 1: 2, which meant they were tied, the direct comparison went to the Icelanders with 5: 2 goals. The best Icelandic scorer in the qualification was Harpa Þorsteinsdóttir , who, together with two other players, was the best scorer in the qualification with ten goals, but was on the field for the fewest game minutes.

European Championship finals

Venues and district (blue)

During the draw on November 8, 2016, Iceland was assigned to Pot 3. Iceland met France in the first game in group C , then Switzerland and Austria for the first time , both of which are participating for the first time. Against France and Switzerland, the balance is negative: in nine games against the French there was only one win and one draw, but seven defeats and against the Swiss in seven games two wins, one draw and four defeats. The last win against Switzerland was on August 23, 1986, followed by four defeats. Not that long ago was the only victory against France: on June 16, 2007, the qualification for the European Championship 2009 was won, after which both qualified for the final round - the Icelanders even for the first time.

In the opening game against France, the Icelanders, who, like the men at the Euro 2016, were supported by numerous fans from the Viking Clap , were able to keep the 0-0 for a long time, but then had to accept the 0-1 with a converted penalty four minutes before the end and then no longer came to compensation. They even took the lead against Switzerland, which only lasted ten minutes. In the second half, the Swiss were able to turn the game around completely and celebrate their first European Championship victory. With that the Icelanders had already been eliminated due to the results of the other games. In the last game they also lost against newcomer Austria, who became group winners.
