The Portland Thorns FC is a women's football franchise from Portland , Oregon . It was founded in 2012 and has played in the National Women's Soccer League , the highest division in women's football in the United States , since 2013 .
The franchise, like the MLS franchise Portland Timbers , belongs to Peregrine Sports LLC.
history
On November 24th, 2012 the founding of a new women's soccer professional league was announced in the USA . It has also been announced that a team from Portland will be attending. On December 13, 2012, it was announced that the new Portland franchise would be called Portland Thorns FC.
On August 31, 2013, the Thorns prevailed in the final of the playoffs 2-0 against Western New York Flash . Thus, the Portland Thorns were US champions in 2013 in women's football and won the first championship of the newly founded NWSL. In the regular season, the team took third place.
In the second season , the team finished third again after the regular season, but failed in the semifinals at eventual champions FC Kansas City .
The 2015 season was less successful : Portland only finished sixth after the regular season and thus missed the playoffs of the best four teams.
The team finished the regular season 2016 in first place and thus secured the NWSL Shield . In the semifinals, however, the team lost after extra time against the eventual title holder Western New York Flash .
In 2017 Portland was able to secure the second championship in the NWSL after 2013. After the team finished second behind North Carolina Courage in the regular season , Orlando Pride was defeated 4-1 in the semifinals . In the final, the team met North Carolina and won 1-0 with a goal from Lindsey Horan .
Also in the 2018 season , Portland finished second in the regular season. In the semifinals, the team won 2-1 against local rivals Seattle and reached the final again. In the new edition of last year's final against North Carolina, Portland lost 3-0. The 2019 season ended Portland in third place in the table and set up the play-offs again. There, however, the team was defeated by the Chicago Red Stars and missed the third consecutive finals.

Portland Thorns FC plays its home games at Providence Park. The stadium has a capacity of 25,218 spectators since an expansion in 2019. The Portland Timbers men's team from the first-class Major League Soccer also plays their home games there.
