preparation

After qualifying, the Spaniards played against England and France, who were also qualified, but lost both games (1: 2 and 0: 1). The Spaniards started the EM year with a January training camp and an unofficial game against EM newcomer Switzerland on January 22, which was won 8-1. In March 2017, the team took part in the traditional Algarve Cup in the neighboring country for the first time, which serves as preparation for seven other European Championship participants. There they met in the group matches against the EM participants Iceland (0-0) and Norway (3-0) and for the first time against vice world champions Japan (2-1). So they were the first newcomer in the final against defending champion Canada and were able to win it 1-0. On April 8th they played against EM newcomer Belgium in Eupen and won 4-1. On June 10th they lost against South American champions Brazil in Fuenlabrada with 1: 2. On June 30th they won against Belgium 7-0 in San Pedro del Pinatar . The conference hotel Villa Heidebad in Epe will be based in the Netherlands .

At the draw on November 8, 2016, Spain was assigned to Pot 2. Spain met qualifying opponents Portugal in the preliminary round group D in the first game , who qualified for the first time, then meets England and finally against the Scottish women, who are also participating for the first time . The balance against the two newcomers is positive: in five games each against both there have been three wins, two draws against Scotland and two defeats against Portugal. The playoff games against the Scottish women were particularly dramatic in qualifying for the last European Championship finals, in which the Spanish women only prevailed in stoppage time. The last defeat against Portugal was on October 18, 1997. On the other hand, the record against England is negative: in eleven games there were only two wins, but five draws and four defeats, the last time in October 2016. The last win against the English women came in first group game of the last European Championship .

Note: For places 2, 3 and 4 the direct comparison is decisive (see mode ).

The Spaniards won their opening game against their Iberian neighbor Portugal 2-0, but then lost to England 2-0. Although they had 74% possession, they could only fire one shot at the English goal. But that gave them the chance to reach the quarter-finals, even if they lost by one goal in the last game against Scotland if England won against Portugal. So it happened, Spain survived the preliminary round in their third participation and moved into the knockout round as the worst runners-up in the group. Since Spain, Portugal and Scotland were tied and each team won against one of the other two, only the goals scored against each other counted for the placement. The goals scored and conceded against England did not matter.

Knockout round

Quarter finals

There were only four games between Spain and Austria - the fewest of all quarter-final pairings - none of which the Spanish lost. The last game between the two ended in a draw on February 10, 2015, the three games before that were won, the first two of which were won within five days in October 2009 in qualifying for the 2011 World Cup. Both will also score in the upcoming qualification for the 2019 World Cup back to each other. As in the group games, the Spaniards had the problem of converting their dominance of possession into scoring opportunities in the quarter-finals, so it was 120 minutes without a goal and the penalty shoot-out had to decide. Here the Austrian goalkeeper was able to save a penalty, while the Spanish goalkeeper failed.
