This article covers the English national team at the 2017 European Women's Football Championship in the Netherlands . England are taking part in the finals for the sixth time.

qualification

England were drawn into Group 7 for the qualification and met Belgium and Serbia and for the first time Bosnia-Herzegovina and Estonia . The English only lost one point in the 1-1 draw at home against Belgium. All other games were won without conceding goals. The best English goalscorer in qualifying was Danielle Carter , who made her debut in the first qualifying game, already contributing 3 goals to 8-0 and scoring three more goals in the course of qualifying.

preparation

After the successful qualification, the English first played against France, where they parted goalless. In addition, they won 4 days later against the final opponents Spain 2-1 and at the end of November against EM hosts Netherlands 1-0. In January, the English played on the Spanish Mediterranean coast against the European champions Norway (0: 1) and Sweden (0: 0). In March, the English women took part in the SheBelieves Cup 2017 , where, as in the previous year, the opponents were EM participants Germany (0: 1) and France (1: 2) as well as world champions USA (1: 0). In April there were games against the European Championship participants Italy in Stoke-on-Trent on the 7th and Austria on the 11th in Milton Keynes , which ended 1: 1 and 3: 0 respectively. The English team finished their preparation with games against Switzerland (4-0) on June 10 in Biel / Bienne and Denmark (2-1) on July 1 in Copenhagen .

The Hotel Mitland will be based in the Netherlands in the first preliminary round, Utrecht .

Squad

The squad for the European Championship finals was named on April 3, 2017. For Millie Bright , Isobel Christiansen , Nikita Parris and Demi Stokes it is the first major football tournament. The other players were already in the squad that won the bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup. Due to a foot injury, Alex Greenwood was unable to play against Switzerland.

Venues

During the draw on November 8, 2016, England was assigned to Pot 1 with hosts Netherlands and defending champions Germany and France. In the first game of group D, England will meet Scotland , which is participating for the first time, then Spain and the other newcomer Portugal . So far, there have been five wins and two draws against Portugal in seven games. The balance against the other two opponents is also positive: against the Scottish women there were 21 wins in one draw and two defeats in 24 games and against Spain in eleven games there were four wins, five draws and two defeats. The last defeat against the Spaniards was in the first group match of the EM 2013, against the neighbors the last loss was on March 4, 2011 at the Cyprus Cup 2011 .

The English, who had never before won more than one goal difference in a European Championship finals, set a new record for European Championship finals in the opening game and won against Scotland 6-0. The realized Jodie Taylor as the third player in the final story in a game three goals.

England and France have met 22 times so far. The English women could only win twice, in 1973 and 1974 in their second and eighth international matches. Then there were nine draws and eleven defeats, most recently with 1: 2 at the SheBelieves Cup 2017 . At the European Championship finals, the two first met each other. At the last event, the French won the group stage 3-0.
