Career
societies
Houghton began her football career at the age of 5 with the Sunderland AFC Women , and in the 2006/07 season she received the FA Young Player of the Year Award. She then moved to Leeds, with whom she won the Premier League Cup in 2010. From 2010 to 2013 she played for the Arsenal Ladies , with whom she won the FA Cup and the WSL premier season in 2011 . The second championship followed in 2012 .
With Arsenal she also took part in the UEFA Women's Champions League four times . In 2010/11 she was used in eight games and was only eliminated in the semifinals against eventual winners Olympique Lyon after two defeats (0: 2 and 2: 3). In the following two years the semi-finals were also reached, where they lost twice to the German runners-up 1. FFC Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg . In 2013/14 she only made three appearances, but scored her first CL goal in the round of 16 in a 3-0 win against Glasgow City FC . Since she moved to the new league Manchester City WFC for the 2014 season, she did not see the quarter-finals against league rivals Birmingham City LFC .
After Manchester City finished fifth in the first season, the Citizens were able to become runner-up in 2015 . In 2016 the championship was won, with Houghton not missing a minute and scoring two goals. In the UEFA Women's Champions League 2016/17 she denied eight. In the semi-final against Olympique Lyon , the end came after a 3-1 home defeat and a 1-0 away win.
The short transition season 2017 called "Spring Series" ended Manchester in second place. Houghton was only in the game at Bristol City not in the starting line-up, but was substituted on after an hour. Manchester also finished the 2017/18 season, which has now been adapted to the normal European game calendar, as runners-up. After two seasons in which she participated in all games, she was unable to play in three games for the first time. In the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League , the Citizens failed again in the semi-finals against Lyon. In July 2018, she and the team took part in the Women's International Champions Cup , which was played for the first time , where Lyon was again the opponent in the semi-finals. This game was lost with 0: 3. The game for 3rd place could then be won 2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain .
In the 2018/19 season, which again ended with the runner-up, she didn't miss a minute again. In the 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League , however, she only played once, as it was already over in the round of 32, where after a 1-1 draw without her at Atlético Madrid, the home game was lost 2-0. Atlético was then stronger in 2019/20 . This time there was a 1-1 home game and a 2-1 defeat away in the round of 16.
In the FA Women's Super League 2019/20 they were in first place in the table on February 23, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the next games were initially postponed indefinitely and finally canceled at the end of May. On June 5, 2020, the second-placed team from Chelsea was declared champions due to the better quotient and Manchester City became runners-up.
National teams
Houghton played for the English U-16 student team and the U-19, U-20, U-21 and U-23 teams and took part in the U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile in 2008 England lost 3-0 to eventual world champions USA in the quarter-finals. In 2006 she was nominated for the national team's game, which was lost 5-1 against Germany , but was not used. It was not until March 8, 2007 that she made her first appearance for the A-Team in a 6-0 win against Russia . Due to a broken leg, she was unable to take part in the 2007 World Cup and was also canceled for the 2009 European Championship . The 2011 World Cup was their first major tournament for senior national teams. In the quarter-finals against France she was substituted on in the 81st minute and thus came to her first World Cup appearance, but was eliminated by the defeat on penalties.
In Team GB's first game at the 2012 Olympics , she scored the only goal against New Zealand . In the second game against Cameroon, she scored the goal to make it 3-0, making her top scorer for Team GB with two goals. Against Brazil, she scored the only goal to win 1-0. In the quarterfinals against Canada she was also used, but had to accept the first defeat with her team and was eliminated.
At the Cyprus Cup in 2015 , which her team won for the third time, she was only used once due to an injury.
She was the captain of the English squad at the 2015 World Cup in Canada . She was in the starting line-up in all seven games and always played until the end of the game. In the round of 16 against Norway, their goal brought England back into the game to make it 1-1, and the subsequent goal of their teammate Lucy Bronze made it the first time England won a knockout match at a women's World Cup. After the quarter-finals against hosts Canada , she was honored as "Player of the Game". England had survived the quarter-finals for the first time by beating Canada. In the semi-final against defending champion Japan , her teammate Laura Bassett underwent the decisive own goal to make the final score 1: 2 in the second minute of stoppage time in a defensive attempt . England missed a possible extension and the final. In the game for third place, she and her team managed to win against Germany for the first time , preventing one deficit. England was able to win a World Cup medal for the first time after the men's World Cup title in 1966.
In the subsequent qualification for the 2017 European Championship , it was used in all eight games. Since the English only lost one point in the 1-1 draw against Belgium , they easily qualified as group winners for the European Championship.
There she was only not used in the third group game against Portugal when some regular players were spared. Due to the 3-0 semi-final defeat against the hosts , the final was missed.
In qualifying for the 2019 World Cup , she made six appearances. The English only gave up a point in the goalless draw in their home game against Wales and qualified early for the World Cup.
In March 2019 she won the SheBelieves Cup for the first time and was used in the three games. This was followed by a use in the 0-1 home defeat against Canada and on May 8, the nomination for the World Cup . At the World Cup, she was the captain in all seven games of the English women as in 2015, making her the most frequently used player as captain at the women's world championships with 14 appearances as captain. It is only surpassed by the Mexican Rafael Márquez (17) and the Argentine Diego Maradona (16). After beating Cameroon 3-0 in the round of 16 , where she scored the first goal, she was named “Player of the Game”. In the end, fourth place jumped out for her team.
