Laura Bassett (born August 2, 1983 in Nuneaton ) is an English football player. She plays for Notts County in the FA WSL and in the English national team .

Career

Bassett began her football career with the Bedworth Girls when she was nine and moved to Coventry when she was 14, playing in the Northern Division of the FA Women's Premier League . In 2000 she moved to the Birmingham City Ladies for whom she initially played until 2008, where she made a detour to the USA in 2006 and played for New York Magic in the W-League . After a season at Leeds, with which she won the Premier League Cup in 2010 , she returned to the Birmingham City Ladies .

Bassett played for England's youth teams and when she made her first senior international on February 25, 2003, she was the first senior international for Birmingham City. Bassett was a member of the English squad for the 2009 European Championship , but was only substituted in the quarter-finals against hosts Finland , and was a member of the squad for the 2011 World Cup . Bassett was only substituted on in the group game against Japan in the 90th minute. In November 2013, she moved to league rivals Chelsea.

At the 2015 World Cup in Canada, Bassett was part of the English squad . She was in the starting line-up in six games and always played until the end of the game. Only in the third group game against Colombia she was not used. In the semifinals against Japan , she underwent the decisive own goal to make it 1: 2 in the second minute of stoppage time in a defensive attempt . England missed a possible extension and the final. In the game for third place, she and her team managed to win against Germany for the first time .
