Games at the World Cup
Venues |
When the groups were drawn, England was not seeded and was drawn to group F with France, which it meets in the first group game in Moncton , which was founded by French settlers . Colombia and Mexico were drawn as further opponents. There were previously 18 games against France, of which only the first two were won. Seven ended in a draw, including one with a loss on penalties in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, and nine were lost. There were previously two games against Mexico, the first of which was won 5-0 and the last ended 1-1 in the group stage of the last World Cup. England could face Mexico again at the Cyprus Cup 2015 . England had never played against Colombia.
In the first game against France, the English could not end the 40-year lean period against the French and lost 1-0. Against Mexico they found their way back on track with a 2-1 win and since France surprisingly lost 2-0 to Colombia in the parallel game, everything was still open before the last group match day. England then won 2-1 against Colombia, which was already qualified for the round of 16 regardless of the outcome of the game, with Fara Williams being the first Englishwoman to score a goal in the third participation after each goal in the two previous appearances . Since France defeated Mexico 5-0 at the same time, which meant they were level on points with England but had the better goal difference, England came second in the group.
England will now meet on June 22, 2015 Ottawa on Norway , the Second Group B against the Scandinavians, there have been 16 games. England won only three, two ended in a draw, but 11 were lost. However, the record of the last four games since 2005 with three wins and one draw is very promising.
With their first win in a knockout game at a World Cup, England moved into the quarter-finals against hosts Canada . Both met eleven times before, including one in the first World Cup game of both teams and six times in the Cyprus Cup , both of which are joint record winners. With six wins for England - four of them in the last five games - and five defeats, most recently in preparation for the World Cup, the result was slightly positive for the English women. In the only quarter-final game in which goals were scored in the first half, the English were able to improve their record against Canada and benefited on the one hand from a defensive error by the Canadians and the unfavorable choice of place for the Canadian goalkeeper, which partially blinded her from the sun. The English women could also cope with the fact that shortly after the half-time break, goalkeeper Bardsley had to be replaced because a foreign body had caught her eye. With that, England survived the quarter-finals for the first time.
In the semifinals, defending champions Japan waited , who cleared Australia out of the way and who had lost a World Cup game against England for the last time. Against the Japanese, the "Three Lionesses" had a slightly positive record: in addition to the 2-0 in the preliminary round of the last World Cup, there was also a 2: 2 in the preliminary round of the penultimate World Cup and a 1: 1 in a friendly game that took place in 2013 in England took place but lost in Canada to an own goal by Laura Bassett in added time with 1: 2. In the game for third place, England will meet Germany , which they have never won against. In 20 games previously there were only two draws, but 18 defeats, most recently in November 2014 at London's Wembley Stadium with 0: 3. Against a German team that missed a large number of chances, the English women only had their own chances towards the end of regular time, but could not use them. In the following extra time, substitute Lianne Sanderson took out a penalty, which Fara Williams converted to 1-0 and thus the first win against Germany. This was the first time England had been among the top three teams at a World Cup after winning the world championship title by the men in 1966 . With her third penalty, Williams set the record of the Norwegian Tina Svensson , who scored three goals from penalties in the first edition in 1991 and is now the sole English record scorer at World Championships.
