Rachel Aba Yankey OBE (born November 1, 1979 in London ) is an English football player. She last played for the Arsenal Ladies in the FA Women's Premier League and in the English national team , of which she was the record player until August 2014.

Career

Rachel Yankey began her soccer career on a boys' team. The striker moved to Arsenal London in 1995 through Mill Hill United . She was briefly loaned to the Canadian club Laval Dynamite before becoming a regular at Arsenal and winning the championship for the first time in 1997. In 2002 she moved to local rivals Fulham FC , where she was registered as England's first professional soccer player. With Fulham she made the triple of championship, cup and league cup in 2003 . A year later, Yankey moved to Birmingham City . As the club ran into financial difficulties, Yankey returned to Arsenal in 2005. Before that, she and her teammate Rachel Unitt made a short guest appearance with the New Jersey Wildcats in the W-League . With Arsenal she won both the championship and the cup in 2006 and the UEFA Women's Cup in 2007 . In 2011 and 2012, she reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League with Arsenal , where she was eliminated by Olympique Lyon and 1. FFC Frankfurt .

Yankey is currently the most famous English soccer player. Rachel Yankey was inducted into the Order of the British Empire in 2006 and made an officer in 2014.

She was in the squad for the 2011 World Cup and in the first two games against Mexico and New Zealand in the starting line-up. In the third game against Japan , she was only substituted on in the second half. In the 66th minute she scored the goal to make it 2-0. In the quarter-finals against France , which England lost on penalties, she was back in the starting line-up, but was replaced in the 84th minute. With four appearances at the World Cup in Germany, she and four other players have now played the most World Cup games for England's women with a total of eight World Cup appearances.

On June 21, she set the record for Gillian Coultard with her 119th international match , who also played 119 internationals between 1981 and 2000.

In 2012 she was part of Team GB that took part in the Olympic Games in London . She was used in all four games, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Canada.

On September 19, she made her 120th international match in a 3-0 win against Croatia and has since been England's sole record player.

On March 13, 2013, she won the Cyprus Cup with her team , scoring the 1-0 winner in the final against Canada.

On April 7, 2013, she set the English record of Peter Shilton in a 1-0 win against Canada with her 125th international match for England . On June 26, 2013, she beat the record in the game against Japan and became a record national player for both sexes with 126 internationals for England.

Yankey was also in the squad for the EM 2013 and was used in the first two group games, but had to be substituted after 18 minutes in the second group game due to an injury and was also able to play in the last group game, in which the English team France 3-0 lost and was eliminated from the tournament, cannot be used.
