Group games

In Group B, runner-up European champions England first met Mexico , the runner-up in the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup . In the runner-up game, the English, in which captain Faye White made her 100th international match, initially had field advantages because the Mexicans started very nervously. In the 21st minute, Fara Williams consequently headed a corner to make it 1-0. Surprisingly, Mónica Ocampo equalized in the 33rd minute , with English goalkeeper Karen Bardsley doing credit to her male colleagues. Then the English pushed for the second goal, but did not come to dangerous goals and could only test the 16-year-old Mexican goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago with long shots, with which she had no problems. As the length of the game increased, the game became more balanced and towards the end the Mexicans had better chances to score. In the end, both teams lacked the strength to decide the game in their favor. It was only the second game between the two teams; the English had won the first 5-0 in 2005.

In the second game, the English met Oceania champions New Zealand . The English had more of the game at first and barely let New Zealand get anywhere near their penalty area. The 1-0 win for New Zealand in the 18th minute by Sarah Gregorius was all the more surprising , when two English defenders could not agree on a cross from the right. After that, the English didn't think of much against the compact defense of the New Zealanders, who were also lurking on the counterattack. It wasn't until the 63rd minute that Jill Scott managed to equalize after a cross from the right with a header. After that, the New Zealanders pushed for another opening goal and had some good opportunities. In their urge phase then fell the 2-1 winner for the English women by Jessica Clarke in the 81st minute. The English women then knew how to bring the result over time.

In order to make it safely to the quarter-finals, the English women needed a win against Japan , the third place in the 2010 Asian Women's Cup . The English, who still had Mexico behind their necks, largely prevented the Japanese from playing their combination game and barely allowed the Japanese to score. Although the English women only had a few chances, Ellen White took the first one . After a pass into the top, she lifted the ball over the Japanese goalkeeper into the goal. They were able to prevent a goal shortly afterwards with an overhead kick from White, but the English team could now start their game. In the second half, substitute Rachel Yankey made the 2-0 win that decided the game. Thus, England could still be group winners in the last group game. It was only the second game against Japan, the first game - in the preliminary round of the 2007 World Cup - ended in a draw.

Quarter finals

As group winners England met in the quarterfinals on July 9 in Leverkusen on France , the runners-up of Group A. So far there have been 12 games between England and France, only the first two in the 1970s, England was able to win, then there were five defeats and five Draws, three of them in the last three games. So far, both have only met in games that FIFA has declared as friendlies.

England started furiously, Kelly Smith had a first chance to score after 16 seconds, but failed to score. In the third minute France also had the first chance to score, but the ball went over the goal. After that, little happened until the middle of the first half. The French controlled the game, but did not come dangerously in front of the English goal. From the 25th minute onwards, there were several scoring chances for France, but the English women were able to fend them off. In the second half the pressure from the French increased, the English team hardly came from their own half. Jill Scott used the first excursion into the French half in the 59th minute to make a surprising 1-0 for England. The following attacks with a multitude of scoring chances by the French women held up the English defense until the 88th minute, but were then powerless when Élise Bussaglia shot on goal . After that, the French pushed for the winning goal, but England saved themselves in extra time. In this, too, the French team achieved a large number of goal opportunities, but were mostly too imprecise or failed due to the English goalkeeper. This also held the first penalty in the subsequent penalty shootout, while the following three shooters were able to convert all penalties. As the fourth English shooter, Claire Rafferty , who was substituted on for her first World Cup game in the second half , forgave . When Eugénie Le Sommer scored for France, Faye White had to score to get extra time on penalties. White, who had previously had problems with calf cramps, ran out of nerves and hit the bar. This was the third time that England failed in the quarter-finals of a World Cup. France, on the other hand, reached the semi-finals for the first time.

In the FIFA world rankings , England improved by four places and achieved sixth place, the best place ever.

Awards
