Group games

In Group D, the Norwegians met the newcomer to the World Cup, Equatorial Guinea , who played a competitive match outside of Africa for the first time and played a non-African team for the first time in a competitive match. The Norwegians started furiously, Haavi hit the post in the second minute . Other opportunities soon followed, but they did not lead to a goal either. After a quarter of an hour, the newcomer to the World Cup made the game more open and had many good chances, which, however, also lacked precision. It was only shortly before half-time that the Norwegians had a chance to score again. The Northern Europeans were also overweight at the beginning of the second half and only after 20 minutes did the Africans come back into play. When they started to have calf cramps, it seemed as if Norway were in better condition, but an open blow exchange continued with chances on both sides. Haavi, the youngest player on the field, took advantage of one of these chances to score a 1-0 winner in the 84th minute. After that, Norway was content to keep the narrow lead.

In the second game, Norway met the 2010 South American champions and Brazil runners-up . The Norwegians initially had more of the game, but without creating any scoring chances. In the 22nd minute Marta then made it 1-0 after an illegal use against Berge . From then on, the world soccer player was whistled by the audience with every ball contact. The whistles only subsided when Marta first prepared the 2-0 in the 46th minute and then scored the 3-0 himself in the 48th minute. After that, the Norwegians tried to score the next goal, as the goal difference can still be important for them, but failed again and again due to the Brazilian defense. They could only spread danger for the Brazilian goal in corners, but then often stood in their own way, as they populated the six-yard area with several players. In the end, the Brazilians managed the result that meant they made it to the quarter-finals. Against Brazil, it was Norway's fourth defeat in their eighth game, with two draws - one lost on penalties - and two wins.

In the final group game against Australia , the 2010 Asian champions , Norway had to win to move into the quarter-finals, as the Australians had the better goal difference. Norway have played against Australia four times and won three times, one game ended in a draw. Norway also took a 1-0 lead through Elise Thorsnes in the 56th minute, but it was 1: 1 straight away. After that, both teams had a chance to win the game. This was achieved by Kyah Simon in the 87th minute, who had already scored the 1-1 after three minutes earlier Stensland hit the crossbar with a free kick.

This is the first time that Norway has been eliminated from the preliminary round of a World Cup and has not qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games , in which only the two best European teams from the World Cup take part in addition to England. Germany, France and Sweden were able to qualify for the quarter-finals. The two goals and five goals conceded are also a negative record for the Norwegian team - only once has a European team scored fewer goals and a worse goal difference in a World Cup preliminary round: Denmark 1999 with 1: 8 goals.
