Group games

Brazil was selected as the "group head" when the groups were drawn. In Group D, Brazil met Asian champions Australia in their first game . Australia started briskly and had a first chance to score in the 6th minute. As a result, Australia became overweight and so the Brazilian women who were rated higher hardly came into play. World footballer Marta could hardly set accents. At the end, however, the matiladas lacked accuracy. Australia also had more of the game in the second half, but in the 54th minute Rosana , who was able to prevail in the penalty area against several Australians, managed the surprising 1-0 for Brazil. Until the end of the game, the Australians pressed for the equalizer, but could not use even the best chances. It was the sixth win - with three defeats - against Australia for the Brazilians.

In the second game, Brazil met former world champions Norway . The Norwegians initially had more of the game, but without creating any scoring chances. In the 22nd minute Marta then made it 1-0 after an illegal use against Berge . From then on, the world soccer player was whistled by the audience with every ball contact. (FIFA evaluated the goal in their daily summary as confirmation of their choice as world footballer.) The whistles only subsided when Marta prepared the 2-0 through Rosana in the 46th minute and then scored the 3-0 in the 48th minute . After that, the Norwegians tried to score the next goal, as the goal difference can still be important for them, but failed again and again due to the Brazilian defense. They could only spread danger for the Brazilian goal in corners, but then often stood in their own way, as they populated the six-yard area with several players. With some quick counterattacks from the Brazilians on Marta, she received applause from the audience. In the end, the Brazilians managed the result that meant they made it to the quarter-finals. Even if they had lost the group stage against the newcomer to the World Cup and runner-up at the 2010 African Cup of Nations , Equatorial Guinea , whose squad includes several naturalized Brazilians, they would have been one of the top two places. Against Norway it was the fourth win in the eighth game, with two draws - one won on penalties - and two defeats.

When they first met Equatorial Guinea, Brazil achieved a 3-0 win, which was largely due to the mistakes made by the Africans. They were able to avoid a deficit up to the 49th minute, because "handball player" Bruna made Guido against Marta and followed her every step of the way - even when Marta tried to talk to her coach - which made her visibly annoyed. The 1-0 was achieved by Érika with a fine individual performance, the 2-0 in the 54th minute by Cristiane after preliminary work by Marta. When Marta was fouled in the penalty area in the final minute, Cristiane converted the penalty. With this win, Brazil is the only team without conceding a goal to advance to the quarter-finals as group winners.

Quarter finals

As group winners, Brazil met the USA in the quarter-finals in Dresden on July 10th , runners-up in Group C. Before that, there were 27 games between the two teams, the USA won 23, Brazil won two, two games ended in a draw, one of which was on penalties won. The last time they met in the final of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the USA won 1-0 after extra time.

Both teams started nervously and so the Brazilian Libera Daiane steered the first sharp cross into their own goal in the second minute. Shortly after the renewed kick-off, the nervousness on the part of the Americans became apparent , but Hope Solo was able to intercept a Cristiane cross. After that, the game calmed down a bit and high-profile scoring chances remained in short supply. Solo took a Marta corner kick in the 22nd minute , but Aline Pellegrino headed to the side netting. The game got tougher and the referee from Australia distributed yellow cards - a total of seven in the course of the game, u. a. to Marta, who continued to criticize the referee's decisions and thus again attracted the displeasure of the audience, which from now on whistled for every action. The USA saved the lead in the half-time break. After the break there were few chances to score, too often the ball was hit far forward by both teams where it could not be picked up. It was only in the 63rd minute that Carli Lloyd hit the crossbar of the Brazilian goal after a free kick with a header. Three minutes later it got dramatic. Rachel Buehler put Marta in the penalty area and saw the red card as the first outfield player of the tournament . The due penalty kicked by Cristiane was saved by Solo, but since a player from the US team ran into the penalty area too early, the penalty was repeated and Marta converted safely. After that, nothing happened for a long time because the South Americans could not use their majority and technical advantages and the third extension of this quarter-final followed. Already in the 2nd minute of extra time, Marta took the lead for Brazil when she took a flank hit by Maurine from a slightly offside position with her back to the goal and shot at the inside post, from which the ball jumped into the net, out of reach for Solo. Now the US girls had to run after the jump back, which they mostly did without great precision. Abby Wambach was only able to head a wide cross from Megan Rapinoe into the goal in the 122nd minute . Shortly afterwards the whistle was blown and there was the second penalty shootout at this World Cup. This also started with a repeated penalty, because when the Brazilian goalkeeper Andréia Suntaque saved Shannon Boxx's first penalty , she was too far from the goal line. Boxx was more successful on the second attempt. After that, Christiane, Lloyd, Marta and Wambach transformed safely before Daiane forgave, who already made the own goal in the second minute. Since then all other shooters scored, the USA won the penalty shoot-out 5-3 - the last Brazilian didn't have to compete. This meant that the last continental champion still in competition at this World Cup was eliminated before the semi-finals and for the first time in World Cup history, no current continental champion reached the semi-finals.

Awards

Érika and Marta were elected to the All-Star-Team and Marta was awarded the silver shoe for the second best goalscorer. In addition, the goal of Érika against Equatorial Guinea was nominated for the election of the best goal of the tournament.
