The 3rd South American Women's Soccer Championship ( Sudamericano Femenino in Spanish ) took place from March 1st to 15th, 1998 in Argentina . The game was played at the Estadio José María Minella in Mar del Plata , Province of Buenos Aires . The winner was Brazil for the third time . For the first time, all ten members of CONMEBOL took part in the tournament. For Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay it was the first games of the women's national team and the games against Brazil ended for Peru and Venezuela with the biggest defeat in their international history. The 15: 0 for Brazil against Peru is also the highest victory of a South American team in a neutral position.
The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reached the final. The South American champions qualified for the 1999 Women's World Cup .
