The 5th South American Women's Football Championship ( Sudamericano Femenino in Spanish ) took place from November 10th to 26th, 2006 in the Argentine city of Mar del Plata , Buenos Aires Province . The venue was the Estadio José María Minella , built for the Football World Cup in 1978 , where all games were played. Host Argentina secured their first victory in the South American Championship with a 2-0 win over four-time title winners Brazil . For Brazil this defeat was also the first against a South American comrade.
The top scorer was the Brazilian Cristiane , who scored 12 goals during the tournament. The tournament was also the South American qualification for the 2007 Women's World Cup and the Olympic Games in the People's Republic of China . The South American champions and the second qualified for the World Cup finals, the South American champions directly for the Olympic Games, while the second against the second in the Africa qualification had to play a playoff in Beijing .

All ten national teams of the South American Confederation had qualified for the tournament. The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the final round, in which each team played again against each other team. The points and goals scored in the preliminary round were not taken over. The team with the highest points in the finals became the 2006 South American champions.

Argentina became South American champions for the first time and qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics for the first time and, together with Brazil, for the 2007 World Cup . Brazil then won the play-off in Beijing against Ghana and was also able to take part in the Olympic Games, where the team lost to the United States in the final and won the silver medal.
