The tournament was also the South American qualification for the 2007 Women's World Cup and the Olympic Games in the People's Republic of China . The South American champions and the second qualified for the World Cup finals, the South American champions directly for the Olympic Games, while the second against the second in the Africa qualification had to play a playoff in Beijing .
All ten national teams of the South American Confederation had qualified for the tournament. The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams each.
