Maren Nævdal Mjelde (born November 6, 1989 in Bergen ) is a Norwegian football player and has been the captain of the senior national team since September 2015 . She has been playing for the Chelsea Ladies since 2017 .

Career

Mjelde started playing football at IL Fri in 1995 at the age of five and moved to Arna-Bjørnar's youth department in 2005 . In 2006 she made her debut in the top series at the age of 16 and played a total of 155 league games by 2012, in which she scored 49 goals. On December 14, 2012, she signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with Bundesliga club 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam , valid from January 1, 2013. With Potsdam she became German runner- up in 2013 and reached the final in the DFB Cup , which was lost 3-2 to VfL Wolfsburg . In May 2014, she announced that she would not renew her contract in Potsdam and that she would move to Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC in the Swedish Damallsvenskan on July 1, 2014 . Mjelde signed a contract in Gothenburg until the end of 2015. In Sweden she played nine games in Damallsvenskan and then returned to Norway to play for Avaldsnes IL . She was twice runner-up with the club and took part in qualifying for the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League . With three wins, the Norwegians qualified for the round of 32, where they lost two times against Olympique Lyon (2-5 at home and 0-5 in Lyon). For the 2017 season she switched to the Chelsea Ladies and won the English championship in the transition season ("FA WSL Spring Series"), which was defended in 2017/18 and completed by winning the cup. In the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League , she made it to the semi-finals with the Chelsea Ladies, where they lost 3-1 and 2-0 to VfL Wolfsburg . In 2018/19 the semi-finals were also reached, where Olympique Lyon were one goal better.

National team

Mjelde went through all youth national teams. In 2007 she took part with the U-19 team at the U-19 European Championship in which she lost 3-0 to England in the semi-finals. However, Norway had qualified for the U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile in 2008 , where it was used in all three group matches. As third in the group, Norway could not qualify for the quarter-finals.

On October 27, 2007, shortly before her 18th birthday, she played her first international match in a 3-0 win over Russia . For the time being, this was her only A international match and she initially continued to play for the youth teams. It was not until March 2009 that she came back to the A-Team at the Algarve Cup and was then nominated for the 2009 European Women's Football Championship in Finland . There the defender came on five missions and reached the semi-finals with her team . In 2010 she finally established herself in the senior national team and was used 14 times. a. again at the Algarve Cup and in the World Cup qualification . In 2011 she also took part in the Algarve Cup with Norway and was appointed to the squad for the 2011 World Cup in Germany. She was used in the three preliminary round games, but was eliminated with Norway for the first time in a World Cup preliminary round.

With the Norwegian national team , she took part in the 2013 European Women's Football Championship in Sweden , where she was used in all six games, and reached the final with her, which was lost 1-0 .

Mjelde was also part of the squad for the 2015 World Cup . In the second group game against Germany, she equalized the 1-1 final score with a directly converted free kick. The goal was then nominated for the most beautiful tournament goal. The Norwegians reached the second round in second place, but were eliminated by England.

At the beginning of the qualification for the 2017 European Championship , she was appointed captain of the team by the new national coach Roger Finjord .

At the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games , she made her 100th international match in the last group game against Switzerland . But she could not qualify with her team.

The subsequent qualification for the 2017 European Championship ended with seven wins and one draw as group winners. At the European Championships, however, the Norwegians failed to score for the first time and were eliminated as the bottom group. In the subsequent qualification for the 2019 World Cup , she was one of the eight Norwegians who played all eight qualifying games. In the end, they were group winners before European champions Netherlands . She had her first tournament success in 2019 when she won the Algarve Cup . On May 2, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup and thus her third World Cup. With 136 internationals, she was the player with the most internationals in the squad. At the World Cup, five more were added, in which she led her team onto the field as captain, but was eliminated with her in the quarter-finals against England . This meant that the Norwegians could not qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Maren's brother Erik Mjelde plays for Lillestrøm SK in the top Norwegian league.
