Fara Tanya Franki Williams Merrett MBE (born January 25, 1984 in London ) is an English football player . The midfielder has been under contract with Reading FC since 2017 . Before that she played for Arsenal Ladies FC for two years . She has been playing for the English national team since 2001 and has been the record player since August 2014. She also played for Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games .

Life

Williams began her career with Chelsea LFC at the age of seven and joined the Charlton Athletic Ladies in 2001 . She has been with Everton since 2004. With Everton she was English runner-up four times and won the league cup in 2008 . In 2010 she won the FA Women's Cup with Everton .

On November 24, 2001, she made her debut in the English national team at an international match in Portugal . With the English national team she took part in the 2005 European Championship , the 2007 World Championship and the 2009 European Championship . She was also nominated for the 2011 World Cup . In the first World Cup game against Mexico , she scored her 35th international goal. In the group game against New Zealand and in the quarter-finals against France she came to further missions, but was eliminated against France on penalties.

On March 1, 2012, she made her 100th international match in the Cyprus Cup game against Switzerland , where she scored the 1-0 winner in the 75th minute.

In 2012 she was part of Team GB , which participated in the Olympic Games in London . She was used in all four games, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Canada.

In 2013 she won the Cyprus Cup with England and was in the squad for the 2013 European Championship . There she was used in all three group games, but retired with her team after the preliminary round.

In the final of the Cyprus Cup in 2014 , she made her 125th international match and had played the second most games for England together with Peter Shilton , the men's record holder . On June 19, 2014, she set Rachel Yankey's record with her 129th international match for England . On August 3, 2014, she made her 130th international match in a 4-0 friendly against Sweden and has since been the sole English record holder.

Williams was also part of the English squad for the 2015 World Cup and alongside captain Steph Houghton and goalkeeper Karen Bardsley was one of the players who played in all seven games. She scored three goals from penalties, something that only Norwegian Tina Svensson had achieved in the first edition in 1991. With the last converted penalty in the game for third place, she secured her first victory against Germany and thus third place for England, which means that England was among the top three teams again at a World Cup, 49 years after the men won the world championship in 1966 could place. With five goals she is now the English record goal scorer at world championships. With 40 goals she is the third best goalscorer in the women's national team and has scored the most goals of all midfielders.

On March 6, 2016, she made her 150th international match for England in the SheBelieves Cup 2016 in a 2-1 draw against Germany.

For the 2016 season, she moved to Arsenal Ladies FC after four years in Liverpool .
