Kim Christiansen (born May 8, 1976 in Drammen ) is a Norwegian snowboarder who was mainly active as a freestyler in the halfpipe discipline and later also in slopestyle .

Career

Kim Christiansen started snowboarding at an early age and decided to become a professional snowboarder when he was sixteen. He made his first international appearance at the Snowboard World Championships 1997 in Innichen with a thirteenth place. Until then he had not participated in a race in the FIS World Cup. In the World Cup he made his debut in Tignes in November of the same year in seventh place. In the following January he achieved his first and only victory, again in Innichen, directly followed by a second place the next day. Together with another place in the points (17th place) in Whistler , a total of 2300 points were enough for third place in the discipline World Cup halfpipe of the 1997/1998 season and meant 30th place in the overall World Cup. This remained his best results in the overall rankings of the World Cup.

At the premiere snowboard competitions at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano , he was one of four Norwegians - the others were Daniel Franck , Klas Vangen and Roger Hjelmstadstuen - in the halfpipe competition. He finished 20th out of 36 starters, Gian Simmen from Switzerland won ahead of his compatriot Franck.

After a serious injury, Christiansen started at ISF races and world championships in the 1999 season. In the qualification for the halfpipe of the Snowboard World Championship 1999 in Val di Sole he finished second, but was only able to place 16th and last in the final.

Because of his qualification for the Olympic Games, he came back to the FIS World Cup in January 2001 and came back to the top with a fourth place in Kronplatz . He won his next race - the world championship - and it was also the greatest success of his career, becoming world champion in 2001 in the halfpipe.

In the World Cup of the 2002 season Christiansen completed only two FIS races , where he was third once. In February he was back on the Norwegian Olympic team . This time he was the second best Norwegian in fourteenth, his best finish at the Olympic Games.

Christiansen was only active in the World Cup again in the 2003/2004 season , at the end of the season he had two top ten placements and 23rd place in the discipline World Cup. The following season began for him with a third place on the podium at the World Cup in Saas-Fee . He repeated this placement in January in Whistler at the 2005 World Championships . It remained his last major successes, he was only able to place in the top ten in one race of the Nor-Am Cup . His only race in 2006 was the halfpipe competition at the 2006 Olympic Games in Bardonecchia , as 41st he could not build on previous results.

Christiansen has competed in a total of five races in the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour since 2003. He got two eighth places in slopestyle. In the halfpipe and the quarterpipe he was able to place in the top twenty. He organizes races himself to qualify for the Ticket to Ride World Tour. He also started in slopestyle and was able to achieve a victory. He organizes so-called “old boys” snowboard competitions and championships, in which he competes himself, for example in 2008 he won a race on the mogul slope . Along with Terje Håkonsen he organized the end of 2004 a snowboard event in aid of the tsunami - victims of the Indian Ocean .
