Iouri Podladtchikov ( Russian Юрий Юрьевич Подладчиков / Juri Jurjewitsch Podladtschikow ; born September 13, 1988 in Podolsk , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian - Swiss snowboarder who was particularly successful in the halfpipe . Podladtchikov used to run for Russia before being naturalized by Switzerland in 2007. His greatest successes are the 2014 Olympic victory and the 2013 world championship.

Career

Beginnings in the World Cup and at major events (2003-2006)

The snowboarder made his debut at the age of 14 at the 2003 Russian Championships, where he finished 30th out of 35 participants. A year later, in February 2004, he took part in his first major international event, the Junior World Championships in Germany and the Czech Republic. In Big Air he reached the 17th place, which placed him in the top fifth of the starting field. Also in the halfpipe he achieved a result in the top half with 37th place. From now on, Podladtchikov concentrated on these two disciplines, only in TTR competitions he also competed in slopestyle . After the good results at the Junior World Championships, he made his debut in the FIS World Cup Tour in October 2004 at the age of 16 , in which he only missed the points by one place as 31st. In the same winter, Podladtchikov also started at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2005 in Monthey , where he finished fifth in the halfpipe and in a second World Cup, which he finished in twentieth.

In the summer of 2005, Podladtchikov stated in an interview that he wanted to change his nationality and become Swiss immediately after the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin . In contrast, he said six months later that a change of nation was “not specific at the moment”; if he were temporarily banned after such a change of association would be out of the question anyway. The 2005/06 season began for Podladtchikov with a 19th place in the halfpipe at the World Cup in Whistler . The snowboarder also won his first European Cup race. At the end of December 2005 he also made his debut in the TTR in Davos, where he was 21st. In January 2006, further FIS World Cup and TTR competitions followed, in which he performed differently; best result was a 13th place at the World Cup in Kreischberg , he also won the Junior Burton European Open in Laax . The World Cup results among the top twenty, which are decisive for the Olympic qualification alone, were enough to be nominated for the Olympic Games in mid-February. After achieving this goal, the young athlete was promoted by the Russian Federation for the first time. Until then, Podladtchikov had to book the World Cup prizes independently. Overall, the snowboarder criticized the organization in the association as “too lax” and the conditions as “confusing”, it was difficult to concentrate on the essentials. Looking ahead to the Olympics, he saw no chance of a medal, his goal was to simply drive and do his best. In fact, Podladtchikov had no chance after a failed first qualifying round, which he finished 44th and last. In the end, he placed himself in 37th place, clearly missing the final of the top twelve. With the Olympic Games, the athlete also ended the season in which he was 87th in the World Cup.

First World Cup victory and podium results in the TTR (2006-2010)

Podladtchikov opened the 2006/07 season with his first win at a TTR event. The rail battle , in which he won the slopestyle competition, was an event that was only rated with two out of six stars, i.e. rather low-class. At the beginning of the new year 2007, however, he also impressed at two 6-star events, the O'Neill Evolution and the Burton European Open , where he finished second in the halfpipe both times and collected so many points for the TTR overall classification. At the end of January he also took part in the World Cup for the first time . There he missed the finals in both the halfpipe and big air and finished 56th and 43rd respectively. Subsequently, Podladtchikov did without further FIS World Cup races and concentrated on the TTR, where he took further top ten placements. Overall, he reached sixth place in the overall ranking and thus secured invitations to the prestigious events of the next season. In contrast, his overall World Cup placement was significantly worse than in the previous year, as he had only started one race.

In July 2007 Podladtchikov finally changed the association. The head coach for the freestyle area in the Swiss team, Marco Bruni , explained that the new Swiss had always been part of the team because he had trained with the rest of his teammates. There were no problems with the change of nation, as the Russian Federation did not oppose it. He played his first competitions as a Swiss in New Zealand in August and September, first at the Burton New Zealand Open , which he finished sixth in the halfpipe, then at the World Cup opener in Cardrona , where he was second for the first time on a World Cup podium. After Podladtchikov was able to win the European Cup in Saas-Fee and the World Cup a few days later, he became a favorite in the World Cup and in the meantime also took the lead in it. The snowboarder, who had already created distance to his competitors in qualifying, was very satisfied with the race and said: “It went so incredibly well today. In this super pipe I was able to show an almost perfect run, except for the last hit. I only needed one try to do my tricks. ”After that, Podladtchikov took a two-month break before starting 2008 at the TTR again. There he managed to make it into the top ten four times in a row within two and a half weeks - including a podium result in a 4-star event - which meant that he also took the lead at the TTR for three weeks. At the end of the season he came on the podium twice in the World Cup, he finished second once and third once. In the end, he won the Halfpipe World Cup with over 1000 points ahead of second-placed Gregory Bretz and was 13th in the overall World Cup. On the TTR it was enough again for the sixth place overall after the end of the season rather declining performance; With eleven races included, he was one of the most consistent snowboarders on the tour.

Podladtchikov started the 2008/09 season late. Up to the end of 2008 there was only a 27th place in the NorAm-Cup . For this he was recognized as an athlete by the city of Zurich, where he had lived since moving to Switzerland, and the award ceremony took place in March 2009. In January 2009, he played some initially less successful competitions on the TTR, then he reached third place at the Burton European Open . The Swiss also finished the first two competitions in the World Cup in third place. Although he only started in one World Cup event - the Big Air in Moscow - he finished 13th in the halfpipe and 45th in the overall World Cup. In about the same area he placed himself on the TTR, where he was 49 overall. has been.

The 2009/10 Olympic World Cup season began for Podladtchikov with another podium result, a second place in Cardrona, where he only had to admit defeat to the halfpipe Olympic champion Shaun White . The 2009/10 season on the Swatch TTR Tour was successful for Podladtchikov with a win in the halfpipe of the 6Star O'Neill Evolution and the 5Star Burton Canadian Open. At the last 6-star event of the tour, the Burton US Open, Iouri narrowly missed the halfpipe podium and finished the competition in 4th place. He was one of the few snowboarders (next to Shaun White) to take part in the halfpipe this season 1260 Double McTwist mastered. He finished the TTR World Tour in second place in the overall list with 880.24 points, behind the Finn Peetu Piiroinen, who dominated the 2009/10 Tour .

World champion and Olympic champion

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , Podladtchikov took fourth place. On February 18, 2012, he became TTR world champion in the halfpipe. In 2013 he won the FIS World Championship in the halfpipe. He also won the BEOs in 2012. At the X Games in Tignes on March 21, 2013, he successfully competed for the first time in the “ YOLO Flip” he had created , an extremely demanding 1440 ° double cork turned overhead. Eleven months later, at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he became Olympic champion.

resignation

After numerous injuries (cruciate ligament rupture, traumatic brain injury, Achilles tendon rupture), Podladtchikov retired from competitive sports on August 23, 2020.

Private

Podladtchikov's father, a professor of geophysics , emigrated to Western Europe from the newly formed state of Russia in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the CIS . After working in Sweden and the Netherlands, the Podladtchikovs settled in Switzerland in 1996. Until the summer of 2007 he took part in competitions for Russia. He became a Swiss citizen and thus a dual citizen . Because of his good performance in the following winter, the snowboarder said he received an offer from the Russian Federation to start again for it. However, he rejected this offer on the grounds that “everything in the Swiss association is much more professional”. In addition to snowboarding, Podladtchikov, like other athletes in the discipline, likes to skateboard.

Varia

Iouri Podladtchikov was nominated along with five other people as a possible winner of the Arosa Humor shovel 2014, a jury award of Arosa Humor Festival .
