The 9th FIS Snowboard World Championships took place from January 15-22, 2011 in the Spanish ski resort La Molina (Catalonia). The choice of the venue was made on May 25, 2006 by the members of the FIS Executive Committee during the 45th FIS Congress in Vilamoura (Portugal). The Spanish Ski Association was the only one that had applied to host the event.

It was the first time that Spain hosted a World Snowboard Championship. For the country, the competitions were the second major winter sports event after the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996 .

Program and participants

Eleven competitions were held, five for women and six for men. In parallel slalom , parallel giant slalom , snowboard cross , slopestyle and the halfpipe both women have measured as well as men, in the Big Air only men. The competitions took place in the ski areas Alabaus and El Pedró in La Molina. Only the Big Air competition took place at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona . Particular attention was paid to the Slopestyle competitions. It was part of the program of a snowboard world championship for the first time. If the sport debuts successfully, the IOC could finally decide to include slopestyle in the program of the Olympic Games in March 2011.

A new record was set for the number of participants. 370 athletes from 44 nations took part in the competitions. The Snowboard Association Germany SVD participated with eight athletes, five women and three men. However, no German athletes took part in five of the eleven competitions.

 Marion Kreiner was eliminated in the round of 16 and was 9. Julia Dujmovits was eliminated in the round of 16 and was 10. Anke Karstens was eliminated in the round of 16 and was 12. Julie Zogg was eliminated in the round of 16 and was 13th. Selina Jörg missed the finals in 19th place. Isabella Laböck missed the finals in 28th place.

 Amelie Kober narrowly missed a medal. In the semifinals she was already the maximum time of 1.5 s ahead after her opponent fell after the first run, but lost the lead in the second run with a mistake at the penultimate goal. In the small final, she finished just 0.04 s after Doris Günther .  

 Ina Meschik eliminated in the round of 16. Isabella Laböck eliminated in the round of 16. Marion Kreiner eliminated in the second round. Julia Dujmovits eliminated in the round of 16. Patrizia Kummer eliminated in the round of 16.

 Lindsey Jacobellis became world champion in this discipline for the third time after 2003 and 2005. She won ahead of Nelly Moenne Loccoz , who won the qualification, and the World Cup leader Dominique Maltais .   

 Emilie Aubry reached the finals as 8th of the qualification and was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Susanne Moll reached the finals as 12th in the qualification and was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Maria Ramberger reached the finals as 13th in qualification and was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

 After good results in the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour, Silvia Mittermüller was one of the favorites in advance, but then had to cancel her participation at short notice due to an injury.

 Pia Meusburger was 11.

 Alex Pullin reached the finals as 4th in qualification. He is the first world champion from Australia in snowboard cross.

 Markus Schairer won the qualification, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Konstantin Schad reached the finals in 7th place and was eliminated in the second round. Fabio Caduff reached the finals in 11th place and was eliminated in the second round. David Speiser reached the finals in 15th place and was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Hanno Douschan reached the finals in 20th place and was eliminated in the second round. Hans Reichen reached the finals in 29th place and was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

At the fifth Big Air competition held as part of the Snowboard World Championship, Petja Piiroinen was the fourth time a Finn won the gold medal. Zachary Stone won silver only because of the higher number of points in the second jump ahead of the third Seppe Smits with the same number of points . On June 8th, it became known that Stone had consumed cannabis and was subsequently disqualified.
