The 1st FIS Snowboard World Championships took place from January 24th to 28th, 1996 in Lienz ( Austria ). The opening was held on January 20th at 7 p.m. by FIS President Marc Hodler . In the run-up to this event, a merger with the ISF , whose professionals were missing here, had been hoped.
