The 8th FIS Snowboard World Championships the FIS found from 15 to 25 January 2009 in the South Korean province of Gangwon instead. The choice of the venue was already made on June 3rd, 2004 by the members of the FIS Executive Committee during the 44th FIS Congress in Miami . After the competitor Vail withdrew his candidacy shortly before the decision, the South Korean Ski Association was the only applicant.

The main venue was the Hyundai Sungwoo Resort in Hoengseong . In addition to the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony, the competitions in parallel slalom, parallel giant slalom, snowboard cross and in the halfpipe took place there. The big air competition was held at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul .
