Sebastien "Seppe" Smits (born July 13, 1991 ) is a Belgian snowboarder . He competes in the disciplines halfpipe , big air and slopestyle .

Career

In the 2005/06 season Smits took part in the TTR World Rookie Tour and finished second in the Burton AM Tour the following season. Although he was able to find sponsors early on, he took part in the Protest World Rookie Tour until the 2007/2008 season, but never won it.

In October 2007 he drove his first FIS World Cup competition in Rotterdam . In February 2008 he was runner- up in the European Cup competition in Klínovec . In November of the same year he was third in the Big Air at the World Cup competition in Stockholm . This was followed by a second place in Stoneham that season. In January 2009 he took second place at the O'Neill Evolution in Davos . In the same month he was runner-up in the Big Air discipline at the 2009 Snowboard World Championships . In August 2010 he won bronze in slopestyle and silver in big air competition at the 2010 Snowboard Junior World Championships . At the World Cup races in the 2009/10 season he won second place in the Slopestyle at the World Cup races in Calgary . At the beginning of the following season he finished second in big air at the Billabong Bro Down . This was followed by third place in the big air competition at the World Cup in London . At the 2011 Snowboard World Championships in La Molina , he won silver in Big Air and gold in Slopestyle. In February 2011 he finished second at Air & Style in Munich and third at Toyota Big Air in Tokyo . At the end of the season he won the Slopestyle at the Quiksilver Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl . He finished the season in third place in the World Snowboard Tour overall standings.

In the 2011/12 season he won in slopestyle at the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam in Schladming and again at the Spring Battle. He came second in the Big Air competition at freestyle.ch in Zurich , the World Cup race in London and the Billabong Air & Style in Innsbruck . At the Snowboard World Championships in Oslo in 2012 , he won bronze in slopestyle. He was third that season in Big Air at the O'Neill Evolution in Davos and at the Burton US Open at the Stratton Mountain Resort . He finished the season in first place in the FIS Big Air overall ranking and first place in the Tour Big Air ranking. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, he won his first World Cup victory in the Big Air competition in Antwerp . At the Snowboard World Championships 2013 in Stoneham , he won bronze in the Big Air competition. A week later he also won bronze in slopestyle at the 2013 Winter X Games . In March 2013 he won the Big Air competition at the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl . In his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , he came in 13th place in slopestyle. In March 2014 he came third in the Spring Battle. He finished the season in fourth place in the Tour Big Air classification. At the beginning of the 2014/15 World Cup season, he won the Big Air competition in Istanbul . In March 2015 he won the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl and the Grandvalira Total Fight in Grandvalira both in slopestyle. In the Big Air World Cup he took first place at the end of the season. In the following season he won in slopestyle, after sixth and fourth place at Big Air World Cups in Boston and Québec , at the World Cup at Bokwang Phoenix Park in Pyeongchang, second place. In March 2016 he finished 17th in Big Air and sixth in Slopestyle at the 2016 Snowboard World Championships in Yabuli . In the same month he was third in slopestyle at the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl and second at the Grandvalira Total Fight in Grandvalira. He finished the season in eighth place in the Freestyle World Cup and in the Slopestyle World Cup and in third place in the Big Air World Cup. After finishing second at the Big Air World Cup in Milan at the beginning of the 2016/17 season, he won his third World Cup victory in slopestyle on the Alpe di Siusi . When Air & Style in Los Angeles he finished second. At the Snowboard World Championships 2017 in Sierra Nevada he won the gold medal in Slopestyle and also finished 50th in Big Air. At the end of the season he was Belgian Champion in Slopestyle and Big Air and third in Slopestyle at the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl. At the end of the season he finished fourth in the Slopestyle World Cup and third in both Big Air and Freestyle World Cups. The following year he came at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang to 29th place in Big Air and tenth place in Slopestyle.

In the 2018/19 season, Smits won the World Cup in Québec in Big Air and thus achieved sixth place in the Big Air World Cup. At the Snowboard World Championships 2019 in Park City , he came in 12th place in slopestyle.
