As snow park , an area in the mountains between the will Criffle Range and the Pisa Range in Queenstown-Lakes District of the Region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand indicated that could be used in the years 2002 to 2013 as a ski resort and a winter sports fun park options among others for freestyle skiing and freestyle snowboarding . The area has served as a winter test track for motor vehicles since 2014.

geography

The area is located around 20 km south-southwest of Wanaka and around 37 km northeast of Queenstown on the 1545  m high Waiorau . The area can be reached from the Cardrona Valley Road , which connects the small settlement Cardrona with Wanaka , via an approximately 13 km long mountain road with many switchbacks. The entire area has an extension of around 4 km in a south-west-northeast direction and around 3 km in an east-west direction and covers an area of around 60 hectares.

history

Snow Park was opened in 2002 by the John Lee family and was called a first-class freestyle terrain park and designed by ex-snowboarder Frank Wells , who was already in the USA for the Winter X-Games and Van's Triple Crown was responsible.

Later, accommodations were created for a backpacker lodge with 50 beds and luxury apartments, with a restaurant, bar and café, and the park was opened as a dirt park for mountain bikers in summer . But the calculation did not work out for the operator family. Due to the strong competition from the surrounding ski areas, the operation of the park did not pay off. In 2009, the Lee family decided to offer the park, including the 2,700 hectare surrounding land that had been owned by the family for over 60 years, for NZ $ 30 million .

The site was purchased by the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds , a company that operates vehicle test sites in New Zealand.

In June 2013, the company announced that it would close the snow park forever from winter 2014 and no longer make the area accessible to the public and plan to open the park to international ski and snowboard teams and individuals. But the area was expanded as a winter test track for motor vehicles and has been operated accordingly since then.
