Andreas Prommegger (born November 10, 1980 in Schwarzach im Pongau ) is an Austrian snowboarder .

Career

Prommegger began his career as a skier, but changed the sport in 1992 and has since competed as a snowboarder. He completed the first competitions two years later. In 1995 he was accepted into the Salzburg regional squad and made his debut in 1997 - now as a member of the B-squad of the Austrian national team - in the World Cup . Prommegger's best result in this series of competitions remained a 19th place for a long time, which he achieved in November 1997 at the parallel slalom in Sölden . A little more than two years later, the Austrian achieved his first World Cup top ten result, an eighth place in the parallel slalom in Tandadalen . During this time, the 20-year-old had been among the top junior world champions for several years: in 1998 he just missed a medal at the junior world championship in fourth place, a year later he won the silver medal in the parallel giant slalom and in 2000 he was able to win the junior world championship title in this discipline as well as in the parallel slalom win.

In the following seasons, Prommegger established himself among the extended world elite among adults; He achieved several victories in the European Cup and regular top ten placements in the World Cup. From 2004 he refrained from further starts in snowboard cross and concentrated on the parallel disciplines in which he had achieved his greatest successes by then.

2005/2006 season

Since 2005, Prommegger has qualified for every major event and has consistently achieved results between fourth and ninth place. After achieving consistently good placements in the 2005/06 season, the 25-year-old was also a favorite at his first Olympic Games in Turin in 2006 . Before the start he explained that for him being there at the Olympics is "far from everything", that he can still improve and keep up with the best. In addition, Prommegger, who was assessed as a “technically mature 'emotional driver'”, said that the Olympic slope in Bardonecchia would suit his technique. Finally, he was eliminated in the round of 16 and finished ninth.

2007/2008 season

After further second and third places in 2006 and 2007, Andreas Prommegger achieved his first victory in the 146th World Cup race in January 2008. In La Molina , Spain , he won the parallel giant slalom ahead of his teammate and friend Anton Unterkofler , although his right shoulder was dislocated before the race. A year later he triumphed for the second time in a World Cup in Sudelfeld and repeated this success twelve months later in the same race. Since the race in Sudelfeld was the last parallel giant slalom before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Prommegger was again the favorite, which he saw positively. After winning the qualification, the result from Turin was repeated in Vancouver: Prommegger was eliminated in the round of 16 and placed ninth. His teammate Benjamin Karl , whom he had defeated in the "Olympic dress rehearsal", won the silver medal in the same race. In the overall World Cup, however, he did better than ever before and reached third place. He also came second in the discipline world cup in the parallel giant slalom. Prommegger continued this tendency when he won the first race of winter 2009/10 and triumphed in the parallel slalom for the first time. In March 2010 he became Austrian champion in the parallel giant slalom.

2010/2011 season

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season he won the parallel slalom in Landgraaf . In the further course of the season he reached three second places in the parallel giant slalom. At the Snowboard World Championships in La Molina in 2011 , he finished 20th in the parallel giant slalom and fourth in the parallel slalom. At the end of the season he won the parallel giant slalom in Arosa and thus achieved second place in the parallel world cup. In the following season he came on the podium seven times in 11 World Cup appearances. He won the parallel giant slalom in La Molina and Stoneham . In Jauerling he won the parallel slalom and at the end of the season reached first place in the parallel world cup. In the following season he was able to repeat his strong performances. He won four World Cup victories, three of them in the parallel giant slalom and one in the parallel slalom, and won the parallel giant slalom world cup and, as in the previous year, the parallel world cup. At the Snowboard World Championships 2013 in Stoneham , he achieved fifth place in the parallel giant slalom and fourth place in the parallel slalom.

2013/2014 season

In the 2013/14 season he reached the top ten three times in six World Cup appearances. His best placement was second place in the parallel slalom in Bad Gastein .

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished 13th in the parallel slalom and 8th in the parallel giant slalom. He finished the season in seventh place in the Parallel World Cup and fifth in the Parallel Slalom World Cup.

The following season he took part in three races in the World Cup. The eighth place in the parallel slalom in Montafon was his best resignation. At the 2015 Snowboard World Championships on Kreischberg , he came in 14th place in the parallel giant slalom and 12th in the parallel slalom.

Season 2016/2017

Prommegger prevailed against his compatriot Benjamin Karl in the final of the 2017 Snowboard World Championships in the Sierra Nevada and won a gold medal in the parallel slalom for the first time after 21 starts at major events. One day later there was another final duel against his roommate Benjamin Karl in the parallel giant slalom and again the victory went to Prommegger. The Salzburg resident is the third double gold winner after Jasey Jay Anderson ( Whistler Mountain , 2005) and Benjamin Karl ( La Molina , 2011). On March 18, in the parallel slalom in Winterberg, 13th place was enough for him to win the parallel discipline World Cup for the third time.

In the parallel giant slalom held as part of the 2018 Winter Olympics , the 37-year-old was eliminated on February 24 in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang in the round of 16 and finished in twelfth place.

Season 2019/2020

After the canceled World Cup competitions in Livigno (ITA / Coronavirus) and Winterberg, there are no substitute events, which is why the season ended prematurely. In the 2019/20 season - Prommegger secured the small crystal ball in the snowboard parallel slalom discipline.
