Alexandra Schekowa ( Bulgarian Александра Жекова ; English Aleksandra Zhekova ; born October 5, 1987 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian snowboarder .

Career

Schekowa made her international debut at the age of 13 at the 2001 FIS youth competitions in Italy . She quickly reached the podium in March. At the Snowboard Junior World Championships 2003 in Prato Nevoso she achieved a good result with rank 10 in snowboard cross. She also landed 24th in the parallel giant slalom . In March, Schekowa started in the European Snowboard Cup for the first time . On February 7, 2004, she finally made her debut in the Snowboard World Cup in Berchtesgaden at the age of 16 . Already in her first A competition, she achieved her first World Cup points with rank 18.

At the Snowboard Junior World Championships in 2004 Schekowa reached 22nd place in the parallel giant slalom in Klínovec , before she went 37th in the snowboard cross in Klingenthal . After two successful starts in the European Cup, Schekowa won her first national title at the Bulgarian Championships in 2004 in Pamporowo in the parallel giant slalom . In the parallel slalom, she finished fifth.

After Schekowa reached the points twice in the World Cup in December 2004, she received a starting place at the Snowboard World Championships 2005 in Whistler . After rank 29 in snowboard cross, she was disqualified in the parallel giant slalom. She finished the world championship as 43rd in parallel slalom. At the following Bulgarian Championships in Pamporovo in 2005, she narrowly missed the defense of her title from the previous year. Her only success was the silver medal in the parallel slalom. A little later she was able to win bronze and gold in snowboard cross in the second part of the championships in Berchtesgaden and Bansko .

At the Snowboard Junior World Championships 2005 in Zermatt , Schekowa just barely missed a medal as fourth in snowboard cross and parallel giant slalom. From September 2005 she was finally part of the World Cup squad. Schekowa was able to improve her performance in snowboard cross more and more and finally concentrated more on this discipline. In January 2006, in Bad Gastein , she was sixth and achieved a top 10 position for the first time. A little later she was third on the Kronplatz for the first time on a World Cup podium.

At the Snowboard Junior World Championships 2006 in Vivaldi Park , South Korea , Schekowa reached two seventh places. Just a week later, she traveled to Turin for the 2006 Winter Olympics . There Schekow failed in the parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross already in the qualification rounds and finished the competitions in 25th and 22nd place. A little later at the Bulgarian Championships in her hometown Sofia , she won silver in Big Air. In Borovets she also won bronze in the Big Air a little later Parallel giant slalom. After winning the European Cup in April in Bansko, Schekowa started again in the World Cup in October 2006.

After placing two points in Bad Gastein, she qualified for the 2007 Snowboard World Championships in Arosa . The world championship was mixed for Schekowa. The best placement was 13th place in the parallel giant slalom. At the Bulgarian Championships in Bansko and Sofia in 2007, Schekowa won the titles in the parallel giant slalom, parallel slalom and snowboard cross as well as bronze in Big Air. At the World Cup in Furano , Schekowa achieved her best-ever World Cup placement in the parallel giant slalom in second place. She was also third on the podium at the snowboard cross in Lake Placid .

At the Snowboard Junior World Championships 2007 in Bad Gastein, Schekowa won the silver medal in snowboard cross and parallel giant slalom. After a mixed year in the World Cup with changing results, Schekowa won gold and silver again at the Bulgarian Championships in Bansko in 2008. At the end of the 2007/08 season she was back on the podium in Valmalenco after finishing second in snowboard cross. In the parallel giant slalom, she just missed another podium in fourth. Schekowa won two other national titles at the Bulgarian Championships in 2009 in Bansko. She also won the South American Cup in Chapelco, Argentina .

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , where Schekowa was the Bulgarian flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, she fell in the snowboard cross competition and was then unable to participate in the parallel giant slalom. Even at the first World Cup after the games in Valmalenco, she had to sit out due to an injury. Another week later she won gold again in snowboard cross at the Bulgarian Championships in Sofia.

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Schekowa found its way back to old strength and impressed with two podium places in Lech am Arlberg and Telluride. At the 2011 Snowboard World Championship she only started in snowboard cross and reached 14th place. At the end of the season, she won her first two World Cups in Arosa. Schekowa started the 2011/12 season after finishing sixth in Telluride with a second and third place in Veysonnaz . At the Bulgarian Championships 2012 in Borovets Schekowa again secured the title in snowboard cross. A year later she also secured this title.

At the X-Games 2012 in Aspen, Schekowa won the silver medal.

In the 2013/14 season , Schekowa was able to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi after good results in Montafon , Lake Louise and Vallnord in Andorra . In the snowboard cross competition she reached fifth place and narrowly missed the medal ranks. She was in third place for a long time in the final, but fell back after a collision with the Italian Michela Moioli . In the 2014/15 season she finished seventh and fifth in the snowboard cross world cup. At the season highlight, the 2015 Snowboard World Championships on Kreischberg , she came fourth. In the following season she came in seven appearances in the World Cup, six times in the top ten. She won her third World Cup victory in Veysonnaz in March 2016 and came seventh in the Snowboard Cross World Cup at the end of the season.

In the 2017/18 season, Schekowa came seventh in the Snowboard Cross World Cup with seven top ten placements. At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she took sixth place in snowboard cross. At the end of February 2018 she became Bulgarian champion in snowboard cross in Bansko .

Schekowa trains with her father Viktor Schekow, who also trained the competitor Irina Konstantinowa for the sailing competitions at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
