Aljona Igorewna Sawarsina ( Russian Алёна Игоревна Заварзина , English Alena Zavarzina ; born May 27, 1989 in Novosibirsk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian snowboarder . Her greatest success is the 2011 world championship title in the parallel giant slalom .

Career

Sawarsina began her career in 2003 by participating in Russian championships and FIS races .

World Cup debut 2006

She made her debut in the Snowboard World Cup on October 13, 2006 in the ski hall of Landgraaf , where she achieved 31st place. Otherwise it continued to be used in FIS races and in the European Cup this winter. In the winter of 2007/08 she made it onto the podium four times in the European Cup, three of them as the winner. She won a bronze medal at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Valmalenco . Five more European Cup podium places, including one victory, followed in winter 2008/09. There was also a silver medal at the 2009 Junior World Championships in Nagano .

The breakthrough to the top of the world came in the winter of 2009/10. She won her first World Cup race on December 17, 2009 in Telluride . Five weeks later, she finished second in Stoneham .

2010 Winter Olympics

She qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics , where she finished 17th. In the winter of 2010/11 there were two more second places in the World Cup. At the end of the season she surprisingly won the gold medal in the parallel giant slalom at the 2011 Snowboard World Championship in La Molina , ahead of the Austrians Claudia Riegler and Doris Günther .

In the 2011/12 World Cup season, Sawarsina did not get past eighth place. Since 2011 she has been married to the US snowboarder Vic Wild , who then also changed nationality.

2014 Winter Olympics

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she won bronze in the parallel giant slalom.

In the 2016/17 season, Sawarsina achieved seven top ten placements in nine World Cup appearances. She won the parallel giant slalom in Bansko and Pyeongchang . In addition, she came third in the parallel giant slalom in Carezza and won the parallel giant slalom World Cup at the end of the season. In the parallel World Cup she came in second place.

At the season highlight, the Snowboard World Championships 2017 in the Sierra Nevada , she won the bronze medal in the parallel slalom and came fifth in the parallel giant slalom.

Olympic Winter Games 2018

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she made it to the semifinals in the parallel giant slalom, where she lost to Selina Jörg . In the small final for bronze she lost to Ramona Theresia Hofmeister from Germany and came fourth.
