Ester Ledecká (born March 23, 1995 in Prague ) is a Czech snowboarder and ski racer . In 2018 she became double Olympic champion in the alpine skiing discipline Super-G and the snowboard competition parallel giant slalom . In snowboarding, she has twice been world champion and twice won the overall ranking of the parallel races in the Snowboard World Cup . From 2016 it also established itself in the Alpine Ski World Cup .

Career

Personal

Ester Ledecká comes from a sporty and artistic family. Her maternal grandfather Jan Klapáč was a successful ice hockey player ; He became world champion with the Czechoslovak national ice hockey team in 1972 and won two Olympic medals. Her mother Zuzana was a figure skater , while her father Janek Ledecký is a well-known pop musician. Her brother Jonáš Ledecký (* 1993) was a successful snowboarder as a teenager and is now a well-known artist, comic designer and musician,

Ledecká names beach volleyball , windsurfing and ice hockey as hobbies . Her parents own a small holiday home in the ski resort Špindlerův Mlýn in the Giant Mountains . Ledecká learned to ski there at the age of two and stood on a snowboard for the first time when she was five. When she was 14, the coaches urged her to focus on one of these sports if she was to be successful. However, she set herself the goal of being among the world's best in both. In retrospect, she said that the successes in snowboarding were easier to achieve because the power density was less than in alpine skiing. After graduating from high school in 2014, Ledecká initially wanted to study physics ; However, this was not possible due to lack of time, which is why she began studying marketing communication instead .

Snowboard

From 2010 to 2012 Ledecká mainly took part in the European Cup, where they finished fifth in the parallel overall ranking in the 2011/12 season. She took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Liberec in February 2011 , where she won the parallel giant slalom. She contested her first World Cup race on December 21, 2012 in Carezza , where she finished the parallel giant slalom in 13th place. At the 2013 World Championships in Stoneham she reached 17th place in the parallel slalom and 16th place in the parallel giant slalom. In March 2013 she won gold in both parallel disciplines at the Junior World Championships in Erzurum .

In the 2013/14 season Ledecká finished in the top 10 in all World Cup races. In January 2014 she achieved her first World Cup podium finishes in Bad Gastein with a third and a second place in the parallel slalom. A week later, on January 10, 2014, she won her first World Cup race at the parallel giant slalom in Rogla . At her first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , she took seventh place in the parallel giant slalom and sixth place in the parallel slalom. She finished the season in second place in the Parallel World Cup. In January 2015 she won her second World Cup victory in the parallel slalom in Bad Gastein. A week later she won gold in the parallel slalom at the 2015 World Championships at Kreischberg . In February 2015 she won the parallel giant slalom in Sudelfeld and took third place in the parallel giant slalom in Asahikawa . She finished the season in third place in the parallel world cup and second place in the parallel giant slalom classification.

In the 2015/16 season , Ledecká finished in the top nine of all seven World Cup competitions. She got three wins and took third place once. At the end of the season she won the Parallel World Cup and the Parallel Giant Slalom World Cup, while she finished fifth in the Parallel Slalom World Cup. In the following season 2016/17 she won the parallel slaloms in Cortina d'Ampezzo and Winterberg as well as the parallel giant slaloms in Rogla and Kayseri . In addition, she took second place in the parallel giant slalom in Carezza and in the parallel slalom in Winterberg, which means that at the end of the season she took third place in the parallel giant slalom world cup, second place in the parallel slalom world cup and first place in the parallel world cup. At the season highlight, the 2017 World Championships in the Sierra Nevada , she won silver in the parallel slalom and gold in the parallel giant slalom in the finals behind Austrian Daniela Ulbing .

Ledecká competed in nine races in the first part of the 2017/18 World Cup season , five of which she won. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she also won the parallel giant slalom among snowboarders a week after gold in the Alpine Super-G . Ledecká is the first athlete after Anfissa Reszowa to win gold medals in various sports at winter games. She is also the only one who managed to do this in the same games. It carried the flag of the Czech Republic during the graduation ceremony .

Alpine skiing

Ledecká in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (2017)

Ledecká started in December 2010 in alpine FIS races and national championships. Appearances in the European Cup followed from December 2013, where she finished in the top ten in her second race. In the late summer of 2015, she won the Super-G and the combined classification of the South American Cup with six wins in a row . She made her debut in the Alpine Ski World Cup on February 6, 2016 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . There she finished 24th in the downhill and immediately won her first World Cup points. A day later she made 25th place in the Super-G. In the late summer of 2016, Ledecká took part again in the South American Cup. With eight victories in a row, she won the overall classification, the Super-G classification and the combined classification. In the course of the 2016/17 season she gradually managed to get closer to the top of the world in the fast alpine disciplines (despite the double burden of the Snowboard World Cup). She took part in the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , where 20th place in the combination was her best result.

On December 2, 2017, Ledecká finished seventh in the Lake Louise descent , equivalent to her first top 10 result in the Alpine World Cup. She qualified in this sport for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . Two days after she finished 23rd in the giant slalom, she surprisingly won the gold medal in the Super-G with start number 26 on February 17th, one hundredth of a second ahead of the Austrian Anna Veith . Her victory was remarkable in several ways: Ledecká had skied on skis that had previously belonged to Mikaela Shiffrin . According to Ledecká's trainer Tomáš Bank, there was a new pair of skis to choose from and the earlier Shiffrin skis, the latter having proven to be the fastest in material tests, although Ledecká had been using them for over a year and a half. In addition, she had never been better than 19th in this discipline in the World Cup. Ledecká did not celebrate her victory at first, but looked motionless at the scoreboard. According to her own statements, she suspected a mistake and waited for a few more seconds to add to her time. She only realized her victory after the cameraman in the target area gave the appropriate advice. Anna Veith had already given an alleged winner interview, as she already believed she was a certain Olympic champion. In addition, she kept her ski goggles on during subsequent interviews on the slopes and even in the press room because, according to her own statements, she had not expected such a success and was therefore not made up.

Since the FIS had scheduled the 2019 Snowboard and Alpine World Championships at the same time, Ledecká decided to only take part in the 2019 Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre . There, however, she only finished 27th out of 29 rated runners in the Super-G. At the start of the 2019/20 season , she won the Lake Louise descent on December 6, 2019 and thus an Alpine World Cup race for the first time.
