The Arosa Humor Festival (spelling since 2017: “Arosa Humorfestival”; often abbreviated to Humorfestival ) in Arosa is an eleven-day meeting of predominantly German-speaking comedians that was launched in 1992, making it the largest annual cultural event in the canton of Graubünden . It takes place at the beginning / middle of December and is one of the most important cabaret meetings in German-speaking countries.

Venues

The "Tschuggenzelt", in which the majority of the performances of the humor festival take place

The main venue is a circus tent that can hold 1000 spectators at almost 2000  m above sea level. M. at the Tschuggenhütte in the Arosa ski area. In addition, smaller performances for up to 200 visitors take place on the «Blatter stage» in the Blatter's Bellavista Hotel above the local Catholic Church . From 2009 to 2014, the organizers each organized a free open-air act on Oberseeplatz , on the stage of which a special snow sculpture was usually integrated and was visited by around 4,000 people. Since 2012, productions have also been taking place in the new Arosa sports and congress center in front of 300 to 500 people in the “Humor Hall”. Finally, the Tschuggen Grand Hotel is the setting for a special “humor soirée”. The cinema in the converted Kursaal was also temporarily included in the program.

history

After various season starts with little snow at the end of the 1980s, the Kurverein Arosa (today: Arosa Tourismus) under the direction of Florenz Schaffner was looking for ways to compensate for the loss of sales from the traditional December ski weeks. The conductor, who comes from the film industry, initially thought of launching an Alpine film festival , an idea that was soon abandoned in favor of a corresponding event for cabaret and comedy.

Stage in the Tschuggenzelt

Planning started in 1991, and in 1992 the first staging under the name Arosa Humor Festival could take place over five days. For a fancy advertising stunt, two artists were allowed to hang up the mountain with a six-meter-long, printed banner on a cabin of the newly modernized Weisshornbahn . Even at the premiere, they played in a circus tent near the Tschuggenhütte, with the evening performances taking place in the Kursaal. A total of 2,500 viewers followed the ten productions, which included the Götterspass cabaret , the Fischbach duo and the Marcocello cabaret with Marco Rima . In 1993 the number of viewers was already 4,500. The festival grew rapidly, and so the fourth edition in 1995 was extended to eight days and featured 40 artists. Two of the performances were sold out.

After the 1998 event could only take place with improvisational skills due to the short-term jump-off of the main sponsor at the time, the organizers entered into a far-reaching sponsorship cooperation with a large insurance company in 1999. This collaboration continues to this day. Between 2000 and 2007 the Arosa Humor Festival was organized by the agency dettofatto media gmbh under Schaffner's successor, Martin Vincenz. During this time, a larger tent was purchased and all the seats were numbered. In 2002 a total of 8,000 spectators attended the event. In 2008 the festival passed back into the hands of Arosa Tourismus under the leadership of Pascal Jenny .

The "Humor Hall" is located in the basement of the Arosa Sports and Congress Center ( SKZA )

Frank Baumann - an original critic of the event - has been the festival's artistic director since 2009 . His initial attempt to only use the Tschuggen tent as the venue did not prove successful. 2011 saw the 20th anniversary with 24 performances, a new audience record of around 18,000 visitors and, as the finale, a broadcast by Giacobbo / Müller from the Tschuggenzelt. In the longer term, the organizers are aiming for an audience of 20,000, but they do not consider any further growth to be sensible. In 2012, the event took place at the same time as the Arosa Challenge , with which there was a ticket partnership.

The year 2013 brought a somewhat more musical program. In addition, the evacuation of the Tschuggenzelt was practiced under real conditions for the first time as part of a so-called “snowstorm performance” free of charge for the public with the duo Hutzenlaub & Stäubli . Despite the closure of the Arosa Railway at the time, the total number of spectators increased to a good 18,500. The humor festival now generates around 15,000 additional overnight stays for Arosa.

In 2015 the festival was attended by around 16,500 spectators.

At the 25th anniversary in December 2016, Claudio Zuccolini , Marco Rima, Simon Enzler , Gardi Hutter , Manuel Stahlberger and Stiller Has performed . In 2016, Axa Winterthur was the main sponsor for the last time after 17 years.

Awards ceremonies

Two jury prizes have been awarded since 2008, the Arosa humor filler and the Arosa humor scoop.

Arosa humor filler

The designated US President Donald Trump as "Snowman of the Year" 2016

The Arosa Humor Filler is an artist award that can only be won by current festival participants. When awarding the award, the anonymous jury also considers achievements over an entire artistic career. The noble fountain pen , embedded in a stone holder, is intended to serve as a symbolic motivation for the award winners to write other humorous programs. Previous winners were Andreas Thiel , Michael Mittermeier , the comedian duo Lapsus , Emil Steinberger (life's work) and the mask theater formation Mummenschanz . The award replaced the Arosa Schneestern, the previous audience award for the best performance, which was presented to the winner by the previous year's winner and which enabled the winner to perform in the following year. The winners in 2011 were Ursus & Nadeschkin , in 2012 Gerhard Polt for his performance with the Well brothers and in 2013 the cabaret duo Divertimento . In 2014 the award went to Marco Rima, 2015 to Carolin Kebekus , 2016 to Viktor Giacobbo (life's work), 2017 to Claudio Zuccolini . and in 2019 to the Chaos Theater Oropax.

Since 2017, the audience has had the opportunity to choose their personal favorites using the “Applaus-O-Meter”, a decibel meter. This audience award went to the band Dabu Fantastic in 2017 .

Arosa humor shovel

The Arosa humor shovel, consisting of an organ pipe handle and a shovel carved out of ice, is awarded to personalities from the fields of business, politics, sport and culture who distinguished themselves last year with their sense of humor and a prominent “laugh” . A special jury consults in the run-up to the humor festival and selects the winner. Previous winners were Thomas Meyer , Patrick Fischer , Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf , Roger Schawinski , Joachim Schoss , Philippe Gaydoul , Doris Leuthard , Samih Sawiris , Roger de Weck , Pierin Vincenz , the Cabaret Divertimento and Bernhard Heusler .

Snowman of the year

In 2013 the “Snowman of the Year” award was launched. This honors a personality who caused real satire in the media in the past year. The first prizewinner, in the form of a larger than life snowman with a (cavalry) hobby horse, was Peer Steinbrück for his “stinky finger photo report” in the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in the run-up to the German federal elections in 2013 . In 2014, the “honor” of being Snowman of the Year went to Geri Müller . This was due to a naked selfie "scandal" in summer 2014. Monika Fasnacht and Renzo Blumenthal acted as godparents for the snowman . In 2015, the President of the World Football Association, Joseph Blatter, who was dispensed by the FIFA Ethics Committee, was named Snowman of the Year, in 2016 the designated US President Donald Trump and in 2017 Christian Constantin for his public assault on Rolf Fringer .

The humor festival in the media

Ursus & Nadeschkin hosted the TV programs eight times

From 1996 to 2012 Swiss television SRF produced programs from the festival. On two evenings, around two-hour recordings were made by some of the participating artists. Excerpts from it were broadcast in 30-minute summaries on three Sunday evenings the following January. In 2013 the organizer took on this task himself; the film material was now recorded in one evening and broadcast on SRF 1, among others. Private television stations such as Tele Züri , Tele M1 and Tele Bärn have also included the contributions in their programs.

So far, Walter Andreas Müller with Massimo Rocchi , Stéphanie Berger , Sina , Bettina Dieterle , Melanie Winiger , five times the comedian duo Lapsus , eight times Ursus & Nadeschkin , and in 2011 Marco Rima as a replacement for the Cabaret Divertimento , which was lost due to injuries , have acted as live moderators of the programs 2012 led through the program.

For the 25th anniversary, Swiss television produced a 130-minute special program that was broadcast on SRF 1 on December 17, 2016 . The hostess was Sandra Studer . Marco Rima, Regula Esposito as "Helga Schneider", Stéphanie Berger, Michael Elsener , Bliss , Oropax, Marco Tschirpke , Andreas Thiel and Rob Spence had appearances on the show . Gardi Hutter , Nadia Sieger and Jürg Randegger as well as all previous festival directors (Florenz Schaffner, Martin Vincenz, Hans-Kaspar Schwarzenbach and Frank Baumann) were present as guests .

Known participants

In the course of its 25-year history, many well-known cabaret and comedy artists from Switzerland, Germany and Austria have performed at least once at the Arosa Humor Festival. In addition, international greats such as Rebecca Carrington , Jango Edwards , Kevin James , Sam Wills and Rob Spence as well as up-and-coming young talents are given the opportunity to perform. Michael and Alfred Mittermeier , the Chaos-Theater Oropax (13 participations until 2016), Marco Rima, Ursus & Nadeschkin, Ass-Major and Gerhard Polt are among the best-known artists who have made repeated appearances in Arosa .

Arosa Snow Film Festival

From December 20, 2014 to January 11, 2015, the Tschuggenzelt was used on site for an “Arosa Snow Film Festival” that was set up at short notice. Two cinema films were shown there every day in collaboration with Warner Bros. The background to this spontaneous supplementary program was the difficult snow situation throughout Switzerland in December 2014, which is why the organizers expected an increased number of guests for the holidays.
