The Arosa Challenge was an international hockey - tournament for national teams in Swiss sports and resort Arosa . It was launched in 2010 by the SEHV in cooperation with Arosa Tourismus and took place in December at the Arosa Sports and Congress Center until 2015 .

Four teams played for the trophy, a rock crystal . The Swiss national ice hockey team was the host. There were also three other national teams, usually from Norway , Slovakia and Belarus . Switzerland always reaches the final and won three of the five events. Belarus was able to prevail twice.

In 2010 the Arosa Challenge was carried out in Herisau , as the Obersee ice rink in Arosa was under renovation. In 2012 the event took place at the same time as the Arosa Humor Festival , with which there was a ticket partnership.

Despite good cooperation, the contract between the service providers was not extended at the end of 2015. The SEHV wanted more audience income for its four-country tournament, and at the same time Arosa Tourism was not in a position to make higher sponsorship contributions in the future. The follow-up event is the Swiss Ice Hockey Challenge .

mode

Four games were played per tournament, with the winners of the first two games playing off the overall victory among themselves on the second day of the tournament; the losers in the first round played for third place.

The Arosa Challenge 2015 marked the successful debut of the new Swiss national ice hockey coach Patrick Fischer . He was assisted by Felix Hollenstein and Reto von Arx , although the engagement of Arx, who had refused to join the Swiss national team as a player since 2002, was also viewed critically.

With the second tournament victory, the Swiss team took revenge for the lost final game in 2013 against Belarus. For the new coach Glen Hanlon it was also the first tournament victory with the Swiss team after he had won the Arosa Challenge with Belarus the year before. The outstanding players from a Swiss point of view were Severin Blindenbacher, Inti Pestoni and Denis Hollenstein, who each scored two goals. Hollenstein was also able to be celebrated twice as a Machwinner, although he had difficult days as a coach of the Kloten Flyers due to the dismissal of his father .

For the Swiss team under Sean Simpson , which competed without their NHL players, it was the last outing before the 2014 Winter Olympics . The expectations for the silver medal at the 2013 World Cup - the repetition of the previous year's victory - could not be met. In addition, goalkeeper Martin Gerber retired from the squad with a foot injury.

Due to the lockout in the National Hockey League , no fewer than six Swiss people who normally play in the NHL could take part in the tournament: Damien Brunner , Rafael Diaz , Roman Josi , Luca Sbisa , Mark Streit , and Yannick Weber . From the Swiss point of view , the new discovery of the tournament was Luca Cunti , who not only played his first international match in Arosa, but also scored his first scorer points.
