Ivo Rüthemann (born December 12, 1976 in Mosnang ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player who played in the National League A for SC Bern from 1999 to 2014 .

Career

Ivo Rüthemann began his career at the age of seven at SC Rheintal (Schlittschuh Club Rheintal), then moved to HC Davos for five years in 1994 , where he played his first NLA season. From the 1999/2000 season he played at SC Bern , with which he became Swiss champions in 2004, 2010 and 2013 .

In 2004 Ivo Rüthemann was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP), the best Swiss striker and the most underrated player in Switzerland.

On August 12, 2008, he reached another milestone in his successful career. Rüthemann inherited the office of team captain from Martin Steinegger , who left SC Bern after many years of service for the 2008/09 season in the direction of newly promoted EHC Biel .

On March 5, 2013, Ivo Rüthemann played his 1000th game in the NLA, on the occasion of a playoff quarter-final match in Geneva. Only Gil Montandon , Martin Steinegger and Ronnie Rüeger had previously reached this milestone . After SC Bern sensationally missed the playoffs as the reigning champions in the 2013/14 season, Rüthemann set a new record in the relegation round with his 1072nd NLA game. However, this was surpassed by Mathias Seger during the 2016/17 season . His shirt number 32 was then blocked by the Bern City Club and hung under the roof of the PostFinance Arena.

International

For Switzerland , Rüthemann took part in the junior European championship in 1994, as well as the junior B world championship in 1995 and the junior world championship in 1996 . In the senior division, he played for Switzerland in the A-World Championships in 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . He was also in his country's squad at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , 2006 in Turin and 2010 in Vancouver .

Ivo Rüthemann played his 220th international game for Switzerland on April 24, 2009 in Switzerland's opening game against France in Bern at the ice hockey world championship and was thus the sole record national player in Swiss ice hockey, but was later surpassed by Mathias Seger . Rüthemann made a total of 270 international matches for Switzerland, in which he scored 49 goals and 67 assists.
