Career

As a player

Sean Simpson began his career as a hockey player with the Ontario Hockey Association , where he played for the Kingston Canadians for one year from 1976 to 1981 and then for the Ottawa 67’s for four years . During this time he was selected in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round as a total of 141 players by the Chicago Black Hawks . In the 1981/82 season he was with their farm team from the American Hockey League , the New Brunswick Hawks on the ice. Since his contract was not renewed, he joined the Springfield Indians for the following year .

In the summer of 1983 Simpson moved to Europe , where he first played one season for the Tilburg Trappers from the Dutch Eredivisie , for which he was active for three more seasons after a short detour to Zürcher SC . In his first season with the Trappers, he was the top scorer of the league. In the 1988/89 season Simpson stood for their league rivals, the Rotterdam Pandas , on the ice and was top scorer in the Netherlands for the second time in his career.

After one season each at EHC Olten from the Swiss National League A and at HC Fiemme Cavalese from the Italian A1 series , Simpson ended his playing career in 1991.

International

With the Canadian national team Simpson took part in the Junior World Championship in 1980 and reached fifth place.

As a trainer

After the end of his active career, Simpson took over the position of elite trainer at EV Zug in 1991 and became assistant trainer alongside Jim Koleff in 1995. In 1997 he became head coach of the first team, where he became Swiss champion in 1998. In 1999 he took over the position of head coach at the newly founded Munich Barons from the German Ice Hockey League , with whom he became German champion in the first season . After two more years in Munich, Simpson initially remained head coach of the club that had moved to Hamburg and played as Hamburg Freezers from 2002 . He left this in 2003. After an engagement with EV Zug in the Swiss National League A, in which he was already active as a coach in the 1990s, Simpson took over the coaching position at the ZSC Lions in summer 2008 , with which he won the 2009 Champions Hockey League and won the Victoria Cup .

On March 2, 2014, Sean Simpson announced his resignation as national coach of Switzerland after the 2014 World Cup and then led the team to 10th place at the world tournament. He had previously signed a contract with Lokomotive Yaroslavl from the KHL in April 2014 . At the end of September of the same year, he was dismissed after nine KHL game days due to unsuccessfulness together with Colin Muller . Two months later, he and Muller succeeded Felix Hollenstein and Kimmo Rintanen at Kloten Flyers .

Simpson and Muller reached an agreement with Kloten in May 2016 to terminate their existing contracts. The association had announced an austerity course and was taken over by a new owner.

On May 11, 2016, Simpson was hired by the Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) as head coach. In the 2016/17 season, Simpson led the team to second place in the DEL points round, in the playoff quarter-finals it was the end of the line against the Eisbären Berlin. After leaving in March 2017, Simpson hit the headlines for a verbal attack against a reporter, but apologized for his behavior shortly thereafter. He was released in early December 2017. "With this decision, the club management is reacting to the season that has so far been mixed," said the Mannheimers, explaining the separation. At the time of the separation, the Adler were in seventh place in the table. In October 2019 he was employed by Friborg-Gottéron as a trainer consultant.
