Philippe Furrer (born June 16, 1985 in Bern ) is a Swiss ice hockey player who has been playing for Friborg-Gottéron in the National League in the position of defender since 2018 .

Career

Furrer first went through the junior departments of his home club SC Bern before he made his debut in the National League A with the professionals in the 2001/02 season . In the summer of 2003 he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers in the sixth round in 173rd place, but missed the entire 2003/04 season due to an injury. After returning to the following season, he steadily improved his game and reached the Swiss runner-up in the 2006/07 season .

In the 2009/10 and 2012/13 seasons he won the Swiss championship with SC Bern.

In September 2014, after 14 years as a professional at SCB, Furrer signed a three-year contract with HC Lugano , which was valid from the 2015/16 season. For Lugano, Furrer played over 160 competitive games in the NLA, the Swiss Cup, the Champions Hockey League and the Spengler Cup . At the Spengler Cup 2015 he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament. In October 2017, he decided on a three-year contract with Friborg-Gottéron , which will bind him to the team between 2018 and 2021.

Furrer lives with his family in Murten .

International

In the 2007/08 season , Furrer was one of the best offensive defenders in the league, which led to an appointment to the Swiss national squad for the 2008 World Cup . During the World Cup, in which Switzerland reached seventh place, he scored an own goal in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Russia.

At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the silver medal with it. Other international tournaments in his career were the 2017 World Cup and the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. After the 2018 Olympic tournament, he ended his national team career.
