Christian Constantin (born January 7, 1957 in Ayent , Canton of Valais ) is a Swiss entrepreneur , architect and former football goalkeeper . He is known as the owner and president of the Swiss football club FC Sion . He is often called CC in the media .
Soccer
Constantin played as a goalkeeper from 1978 to 1979 for Neuchâtel Xamax and from 1979 to 1980 for FC Lugano . He ended his football career in 1982 with FC Monthey . From 1992 to 1997 he was the first president of FC Sion, which won the championship title and the Swiss Cup under his presidency in 1997. Constantin has held this office again since 2003.
Constantin is reported internationally because he has had several disputes with higher-level associations such as UEFA or FIFA . For example, he compared Sepp Blatter with Muammar al-Gaddafi . In October 2015, Constantin demanded financial compensation for football clubs from FIFA as compensation for the sale of TV marketing rights to sports officials well below the price. In November 2015, he reported to the press that the suspended FIFA President Blatter's salary was almost eight million euros. For the FIFA general secretary, he stated a salary of almost five million euros.
Compared to FC Sion, he is said to have an eccentric leadership style, some critics accuse him of a "dictatorial" style. He was noticed by frequent coach changes: On February 22, 2011, he dismissed his 28th coach, the Swiss Bernard Challandes . On August 12, 2016, Constantin announced the separation from Didier Tholot as the 37th change of coach .
In an interview with the NZZ in August 2013, Constantin confirmed that he would be involved in the sports club with two to four million Swiss francs a year. He gave his share of the club budget at an average of ten percent. Constantin made the transfer balance responsible for the high number of player changes at FC Sion , which together with sponsorship and the European Cup determined the sports club's finances. For 2013 Constantin stated a transfer profit of 6.5 million euros.
After a league game by FC Sion at FC Lugano on September 21, 2017, Constantin physically attacked the former Swiss national coach and TV expert Rolf Fringer . Fringer announced that he would file a criminal complaint for assault. At the end of 2017, the two reconciled.
Allegations of manipulation
In March 2016, the referee Sascha Amhof made a wrong decision in a game between FC Sion and Young Boys Bern . Constantin interpreted the wrong decision as game manipulation and stated after the game that he wanted to take legal action against Amhof. He later determined a reward of 25,000 Swiss francs for reports of misconduct by the referee team. Constantin blamed a conspiracy against FC Sion for the wrong decision. Because his attack on referees violated the rules of conduct of the Swiss Football Association, the disciplinary commission of the Swiss Football League imposed a fine of 5,000 francs on Constantin in April 2016.
Application for the 2026 Winter Olympics
In December 2014, Constantin founded a company on behalf of FC Sion to bring the 2026 Winter Olympics to the canton of Valais . In September 2015 he submitted an application to the cantonal government. In November 2015, the Valais State Council announced its support for the application and made a recommendation to the Executive Council of the Swiss Olympic Association . The cantons of Valais and Vaud confirmed their joint candidacy for the 2026 Winter Games in May 2016.
On September 22, 2017, Constantin resigned as Vice President of the Olympic Application Committee.
