Pierin Vincent

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierin Vincenz (born May 11, 1956 in Chur ) is a Swiss bank executive . From 1999 to 2015 he was CEO of Raiffeisen Switzerland .

Life

training

Vincenz grew up as the youngest of four children in Andiast in the canton of Graubünden and graduated from high school in the mid-1970s . From 1982 to 1986 he studied business administration at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and received his doctorate there in 1989 under Leo Schuster on the subject of the use and development of expert systems in banking . He is a member of the Welfen Academic Connection ( Swiss Student Association ) with the Rhaeto -Romanic student name Grafetg.

career

In 1979 he began his career at Schweizerische Treuhandgesellschaft, where he worked until 1982. From 1986 to 1990 he worked in the treasury department of Swiss Bank Corporation and from 1990 he was treasurer at Hunter Douglas.

From 1996 he was employed by the Raiffeisen Group, where he was initially head of the finance department on the executive board. In 1999 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ). Under his leadership, the cooperative bank became the third largest bank in Switzerland and the largest mortgage bank behind UBS and Credit Suisse . The balance sheet (to CHF 168 billion) and staff (to over 10,000 employees) more than doubled. The diversification strategy he initiated with his stake in the financial service provider Leonteq AG , which was intended to reduce the banking group's dependence on the mortgage business, is considered to have failed so far. Vincenz also became known because, as early as 2012, he was one of the very few Swiss bankers to recommend that Switzerland should negotiate with the EU about the automatic exchange of information . On January 30, 2015, he announced his retirement for March 2016, but resigned at the end of September 2015. He was succeeded by Patrik Gisel , who scaled back the acquisitions made under Vincenz .

Vincenz has held various positions in business, including Chairman of the Board of Directors of the energy company Repower AG (from 2016) and of five companies belonging to the Plozza Wine Group. He was a member of the board of trustees of Avenir Suisse from 2016 .

He was a member of various boards of directors, including Chairman of the Notenstein La Roche Private Bank (until June 2015), the Mortgage Bond Bank of Swiss Mortgage Institutions (until June 2015), Viseca Card Services (until July 2017), the Aduno Group ( until June 2015). August 2017) and Helvetia Insurance (until December 2017) and member of Bank Vontobel (until April 2012) and SIX Group (until May 2014). He was also a board member of the Swiss Bankers Association from 2011 to 2016 . Vincenz was also active in various foundations, including as a member of the board of trustees of the Swiss Finance Institute and the Otto Ineichens Foundation , Speranza, which was dissolved in 2015.

From October 2016 to (formally) November 2017 he was President of the derivatives specialist Leonteq AG, in which Raiffeisen Switzerland holds 29% (with the intention to reduce the stake to 19%). At the general meeting in March 2017, he was re-elected with the worst result of all board members due to the unsatisfactory course of business. In July 2017, Vincenz announced his resignation as soon as possible, and Christopher M. Chambers was elected at the Extraordinary General Meeting on November 22, 2017.

FINMA proceedings

In 2017, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) initiated enforcement proceedings against Raiffeisen Switzerland regarding corporate governance issues and against Vincenz regarding the handling of conflicts of interest during his time with the group. Transactions by the vehicle Investnet Holding, in which Vincenz has been Chairman of the Board of Directors since 2015 and in which Raiffeisen holds a majority stake of 60%, are of particular interest to the supervisors. Vincenz also took a stake in it as a private person with 15%, which he acquired from Raiffeisen. Another reason for discussion was that Vincenz's wife at the time, Nadja Ceregato, was also compliance manager at Raiffeisen Switzerland and was promoted to head of law with a seat on the extended management team when he left. After Finma had insisted on her replacement, Ceregato left the company in June 2017, officially for a sabbatical year with an option to return in another function.

After it became apparent that the FINMA process was taking longer than expected, Vincenz resigned as President of Helvetia Insurance in December 2017. As a result of this resignation and Vincenz' assurance that he no longer aspires to a position of responsibility at a bank or insurance company supervised by FINMA, FINMA discontinued the proceedings against him on December 21, 2017 as now irrelevant. Vincenz emphasized that the decision not to work in the regulated financial sector, like his resignation from Helvetia, in no way meant an admission of guilt. Due to the discontinuation of the proceedings, the public does not find out whether and to what extent Vincenz violated supervisory rules. However, the proceedings against Raiffeisen are being continued (as of the end of 2017).

The Aduno Group is also investigating whether there were any irregularities in the takeover of Commtrain Card Solutions in 2007 and EuroKaution in 2014 (today: AdunoKaution).

criminal proceedings

On February 28, 2018, the Zurich public prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation against several people for unfair business dealings, and Vincenz was taken into custody. After the Zurich judiciary informed Raiffeisenbank about the criminal proceedings, they also filed a criminal complaint against their former boss. The bank also wants to appear in the proceedings as a private plaintiff.

On May 16, 2018, it became known that the Zurich public prosecutor's office "had come across other possible, criminally relevant transactions in connection with the acquisition of Aduno Holding AG or one of its subsidiaries". The pre-trial detention was extended and the proceedings extended to two other unnamed people.

Vincenz was released from custody in mid-June 2018. On November 3, 2020, the Zurich public prosecutor brought charges against Vincenz and eight other suspects. The trial began on January 25, 2022.

private

He was married to former Raiffeisen lawyer Nadja Ceregato from 2006 until their divorce after his first wife died unexpectedly in 2000. His twin daughters are from this first marriage.

From 2010 Vincenz was President of the Board of Trustees of the MEDAS Ostschweiz foundation (medical clarification body), from 2016 a member of the Board of Directors of the Association for the Promotion of Children with Rare Diseases and, also from 2016, of the Association for Foster and Adoptive Children Switzerland, from 2006 a member of the Board of Trustees of Pro Kloster Disentis and a member of the Patronage of von den Swiss Jesuits and Lassalle Institute supported by the Katharina-Werk , Basel . He was also a board member of three tourism companies in his home region of Brigels .

His father is the former Graubünden Councilor of States Gion Clau Vincenz , himself President of the Raiffeisen Group from 1984 to 1992. He lives in Niederteufen AR .
