Terje Håkonsen (born October 11, 1974 in Vinje , Norway ) is a Norwegian snowboarder . He is one of the most influential athletes in snowboard history and was the first superstar in his class.

biography

Håkonsen was born in a taxi on the way to the hospital. Håkonsen came into contact with winter sports as a toddler and began snowboarding at the age of 14 . In return, he gave up his original plans to become a professional footballer. Craig Kelly's visit to Norway in 1989 was the cornerstone of Håkonsen's career, as he became aware of him and took him with the Burton Competition Team to the snowboard camp in Austria . Shortly thereafter, he received a sponsorship contract and joined the Burton Global Team that same year and took part in the World Championship in St. Moritz , where he finished fifth in the halfpipe . Two years later a winning streak began (roughly speaking he won everything there was to be won), which has remained unbroken to this day.

In his native Norway , he is considered iconic and he also includes the world's most legendary snowboard - freestyle history.

His cancellation of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano is particularly controversial and at the same time legendary , as he was classified as a top favorite for the competitions at that time, but canceled due to the basis of the competition and did not take part. Terje Håkonsen did not see a fight between countries in snowboarding. She strongly criticized the rules of the FIS and therefore decided on this statement.

The consequence of his fight with the FIS is the competition The Arctic Challenge , which he has organized since 1999 , which is held annually in Norway as part of the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour and which can also be influenced by the riders. He himself is still taking part and is consistently topping the list. From February 2007 to April 2008 he held the world record in altitude in the quarter pipe with 9.8 m.

In 2005 Terje Håkonsen was the first person to drive the 7601 in Alaska. This first visit is also part of the film 'First Descent'. A YouTube video uploaded in 2006 with the film excerpt on which this descent can be seen has been viewed 4.9 million times to date (as of February 7, 2015).
