Burton Snowboards is an American snowboard manufacturer that not only produces snowboards and bindings, but also clothing, additional equipment and protectors . The company houses the brands RED , Gravis Footwear , Anon Optics and Analog Streetwear , among others .

history

Early years

Burton was founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter . In the beginning, snowboards were initially made of wood and without edges, but the company has perfected them over the years. First, adjustable rubber straps were attached to the board as foot straps and anti-slip surfaces in order to increase the stability. The first small series of boards sold for $ 88 each, albeit on a smaller scale.

The success did not materialize for the time being, and the company initially made heavy losses. Nevertheless, production was maintained and in 1980 ski technology was integrated into production for the first time. P-Tex surfaces guaranteed better gliding properties and steel edges improved grip and control on snow. Those technologies have been continuously developed. Today high-tech materials such as carbon or polycarbonate are built into the products as standard.

The company is also known for constant logo redesigns, which make it easy to organize boards or collections in time. The 13 logo , which is supposed to represent a B , is particularly controversial , but is interpreted in certain circles as the 13th letter in the alphabet as the initial for marijuana .

Growth in the 1990s

In the meantime, Burton grew into one of the largest snowboard manufacturers in the world. Since 1995, Burton has mainly manufactured freestyle boards, which have enjoyed increasing popularity since then. Despite tough competition, Burton Snowboards prevailed in the mid-1990s, the products sold well and innovative product design allowed the company to grow to the top of the market. Today the company organizes many competitions that are officially valid at the associations, produces snowboard films with sometimes unusually high budgets, produces a complete range of products for everything to do with sports and equips the Olympic snowboard team in the USA.

structure

Burton snowboards are mainly manufactured in Burlington , Vermont , but also in Austria (in Uttendorf , Salzburg ), the People's Republic of China and Poland . Burton also owns the snowboard manufacturer Forum Snowboards , the RED range of protectors , the skate streetware and snowboard clothing brand Analog , the shoe brand Gravis and the snow goggles brand Anon. Today the company has six main offices in Burlington (Vermont, USA ), Innsbruck ( Tyrol , Austria), Wrentham ( Massachusetts , USA), Irvine ( California , USA), New York (USA) and Tokyo ( Japan ).

In 2004 Burton bought the four snowboard brands Forum Snowboarding , Jeenyus Snowboards , Foursquare Outerwear and Special Blend (SB) Outerwear from Four Star Distribution . These will be closed in winter 2014 as part of restructuring within the group. The company also owns Channel Island Surf Co. Over the years, Burton has been criticized for trying to achieve a monopoly in snowboarding. The company, which has meanwhile grown into a group, has a very large influence on sport due to its size, which is viewed with skepticism from many sides.
