When the groups were drawn, Costa Rica was not seeded and was “drawn” to group E with South American champions Brazil.

South Korea and World Cup newcomer Spain were drawn as further opponents . There were two previous games against Brazil, both of which were lost. They have never played against Spain and South Korea before.

In the first game against Spain, Costa Rica fell behind in the 13th minute, but took advantage of the Spaniards' euphoria about their first World Cup goal to score their first World Cup goal immediately. Raquel Rodríguez scored the fastest equalizer in World Cup history in which there was no own goal. Against ball-loving Spaniards, who then pushed for the winning goal, Costa Rica defended the draw with luck and skill. In the second game against South Korea, Costa Rica took the lead in the 17th minute, but received an equalizer four minutes later with a penalty and fell behind another four minutes later. The equalization efforts remained fruitless until the 89th minute, when Karla Villalobos , who had been substituted 13 minutes earlier, managed to equalize. This meant that Costa Rica was second in the group before the last group game against Brazil, but needed a win to make it to the round of 16 safely. Although Brazil started without six regular players (including Marta , Cristiane and Formiga ), Costa Rica could not create a scoring chance, but held the 0-0 for a long time. It was only in the 83rd minute that the Brazilians scored the winning goal. With that Costa Rica was only third in the group and since they were the worst third in the group, they were eliminated.
