Soccer World Cup 2015 / Ecuador
This article is about the Ecuadorian women's national soccer team at the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada . Ecuador entered the finals for the first time, and it was the first time the Ecuadorians had ever entered an intercontinental tournament. Ecuador became the last team to qualify with a goal in the last minute of the final qualifier. The team thus benefited from the increase in the field of participants to 24 teams.
qualification
For Ecuador, the route to Canada first went through the Sudamericano Femenino 2014 in Ecuador , in which all CONMEBOL members participated without prior qualifications. This was played over two group phases. In the first five teams met each other, of which the two best qualified for the second round.

When the groups were drawn, Ecuador was not seeded and was "drawn" into the group with defending champion Japan. Other opponents are the teams from Cameroon and Switzerland, who have also qualified for the first time. So far, no team in this group has played against any of the other teams.
According to the positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this was the weakest group: defending champions Japan were in fourth place, Ecuador only in 48th place, Switzerland at least 19, but Cameroon only in 53rd place; Group average = 31. In addition, it was the only group with three newcomers, which had never existed before.
Ecuador started 6-0 in their first game against physically superior Cameroonians, the worst loss of a World Cup newcomer in their first game against another World Cup newcomer. In the second game against also physically superior Swiss women, they helped - especially Angie Ponce with two own goals - that the defeat was even more pronounced at 1:10. However, Ponce also scored the only goal for the Ecuadorians with a converted penalty. In the third game against the defending champion who had already qualified for the round of 16, however, they drew a respectable 0: 1 from the affair. But again it was Ponce who helped. But FIFA rated Yūki Ōgimi as a goal scorer. Here, however, the physical differences were less. Ecuador was eliminated with three defeats after the preliminary round.
