preparation
Canada began preparing for the World Cup in the summer of 2014 with several friendly matches, only one of which was won:
- May 8, 2014 in Winnipeg against the USA: 1: 1 (1: 0)
- June 18, 2014 in Vancouver against European champions Germany: 1: 2 (0: 1)
- October 25 and 28, 2014 in Edmonton and Vancouver against world and Asian champions Japan: 0: 3 (0: 1) and 2: 3 (0: 1)
- November 24 and 26, 2014 in Los Angeles against Sweden: 1: 0 (1: 0) and 1: 1 (0: 0)
In the test matches, John Herdman used a total of 27 players. Of these, Josée Bélanger , Kadeisha Buchanan , Jonelle Filigno , Jessie Fleming , Sophie Schmidt , Desiree Scott and Christine Sinclair were used in all games, but only Buchanan and Sinclair for the full season. Janine Beckie (November 26, 2014) and Allysha Chapman (October 25, 2014) came to their first international matches in the friendly matches.
In January 2015 Canada won the four-nation tournament with three other World Cup participants in Shenzhen ( People's Republic of China ):
- January 11 against South Korea 2-1
- January 13 against Mexico 2-1
- January 15 against China 2-1
In March 2015, the team took part in the traditional Cyprus Cup , whose record winner it is, and met World Cup participants South Korea (1-0 on March 6) and the teams from Italy who failed in the European play-off games (1: 0 on March 9) and Scotland (2-0 on March 4). As group winners, Canada met England in the final on March 11th and lost 1-0, which means they have both won the Cyprus Cup three times. Despite the hope of an invitation, Canada was not invited to the Algarve Cup 2015 , which was taking place at the same time and had a higher cast. On April 9, a test match against World Cup participants France was lost in Bondoufle with 0: 1 and on May 29 a test match in Hamilton against England was won 1: 0.

When determining the venues and days of the match, Canada was identified as the group head of Group A. In the draw on December 6, 2014, China, New Zealand and the Netherlands, newcomers to the World Cup, were drawn. According to the positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this is the most balanced group: The Canadians are in 8th place, the Netherlands in 12th, China in 16th and New Zealand in 17th; Group cut = 13.25.
There have been 25 games against China, six of which were won, five ended in a draw (with a win on penalties ) and 14 lost. New Zealand, which was coached by the current Canadian coach for a long time, had previously been opponents of the Canadians ten times and won eight times, and drawn twice. The Dutch had also played ten times against Canada. Canada won six games, three ended in a draw and one was lost. Canada and the Netherlands had to cover the greatest distance between the second and third group venue, almost 3,600 km overland or around four hours by flight.
In the opening game it looked like a goalless draw for a long time, then substitute Adriana Leon was fouled in stoppage time in the Chinese penalty area. Team captain Christine Sinclair converted the penalty kick to the 1-0 winner. Against New Zealand that was missing and the game ended goalless. On the other hand, Canada took the lead against the Dutch with Ashley Lawrence's first international goal after 10 minutes and looked like the sure winner for a long time, then the Dutch equalized three minutes before the end of the game to make it 1-1. Since the other teams took points from each other, Canada came first in the group games with the fewest goals by a host. Only the eliminated Ecuadorians scored fewer goals.
Canada met Switzerland in the round of 16 . Both had met four times since 2010, two of them at the Cyprus Cup . Canada won three games, one was a draw. Again, Canada kept the upper hand, but largely thanks to a strong defensive performance and goalkeeper Erin McLeod named Player of the Game. In the attack, Christine Sinclair in particular could not set any accents. Only a good combination succeeded and this led to the winning goal.
Canada faced England in the quarter-finals on June 27, 2015 in Vancouver , who had won a World Cup knockout match against Norway for the first time in the round of 16 . Both met eleven times before, including one in the first World Cup game of both teams and six times in the Cyprus Cup , both of which are joint record winners. With five wins for Canada - most recently in preparation for the World Cup - and six defeats, four of them in the last five games, the record was slightly negative for the Canadians. Canada started briskly, but fell behind due to a defensive error and then had bad luck that the goalkeeper was blinded by the sun with a header and the English scored the second goal. Record national player Sinclair was able to score the next goal before the break, but hardly any scoring opportunities could be created in the second half, so that the English women survived the quarter-finals for the first time and Canada joined the ranks of the hosts who failed in the quarter-finals.
