from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Swiss national women's football team at the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada . Switzerland took part in the finals for the first time and for the Swiss women it was their first ever participation in a major tournament. In third place in the group, Switzerland reached the knockout round, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against World Cup hosts Canada and thus also missed direct qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games.

qualification

In the group draw, Switzerland was only placed in Pot C and was drawn into European qualifying group 3 with Denmark , Iceland , Serbia , Israel and Malta . Switzerland was the first European team and the only team from Pot C to qualify for the World Cup with a 1-1 draw between the two participants in the last European Championship Denmark and Iceland on June 15, 2014. Only the 1-1 home game against Denmark was not won and conceded a goal. In addition, the Swiss achieved their highest international win on April 5, 2013 with an 11-0 win against Malta.

Venues

When the groups were drawn, Switzerland was not seeded and was drawn into the group with defending champions Japan, against whom the Swiss have to play in their first World Cup match. Other opponents are the teams from Cameroon and Ecuador, who also qualified for the first time and were the last to qualify for the World Cup. So far Switzerland has not played against any of these teams.

According to the positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this was the weakest group: defending champions Japan were in 4th place and Switzerland at least 19th, Ecuador only 48th and Cameroon only 53rd; Group average = 31. In addition, it was the only group with three newcomers, which had never existed before.

The Swiss lost their first World Cup game against defending champions Japan 1-0, but were the better team, especially in the second half. In the second game against the newcomer to the World Cup, Ecuador, they needed the help of the Ecuadorians for their first World Cup goal, but were able to improve the result significantly in the second half, with the Ecuadorians helping again. The 10: 1 is the third highest win in a women's World Cup game, only Germany have two higher wins. In the last group game against Cameroon, they dominated the first half and should have led higher than 1-0 at the break. Shortly after half-time, they conceded a goal and then not only lost the thread, but also the game with 1: 2. In third place in the group, however, the team could hope that the 3 points would be enough, and since this hope was fulfilled, Switzerland met host Canada in the round of 16 on June 21, 2015 in Vancouver , the winners of Group A. Both played against each other four times before. two of them at the Cyprus Cup . Switzerland could only draw once, but lost three times. Again, despite a good performance, Switzerland could not win and repeatedly failed in their attacks against the Canadian defense. The only good combination of the hosts then led to the decision.

For Switzerland, the game was also of particular importance as the defeat meant that the direct qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games was missed. However, since three other European teams were eliminated in the round of 16 and only two European teams eligible to compete in the Olympic Games reached the quarter-finals, the Swiss women who have never participated in the Olympic women's football tournaments still have the chance to play in play-offs with the also in the round of 16 Eliminated teams from the Netherlands , Norway and Sweden to get the third European Olympic ticket.
