Lia Joelle Wälti (born April 19, 1993 in Langnau im Emmental , Canton of Bern ) is a Swiss soccer player who has been under contract with the English club Arsenal Women FC since the 2018/19 season . She has been playing for Switzerland since 2011 .

Career

Wälti began her career at the age of eight at FC Langnau , where she played in a boys' team that was coached by her father. In 2007 she was accepted into the Huttwil training center and switched to the Bern West team six months later . During this time she played in the youth development team of FC Köniz . In 2009 she moved to Young Boys Bern , where she first played for a year in the male U-16 team, before moving to the first women's team a year later . With YB, she won the Swiss championship in 2011 and rose to become team captain .

In the summer of 2013 Wälti moved to Bundesliga club 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, where she received a two-year contract. In the Bundesliga she made her debut on September 8, 2013 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw against FF USV Jena and scored almost a year later, on August 31, 2014 (1st matchday), in a 4-0 win at home against the newly promoted Bundesliga Herford SV with the goal for the interim 2-0 in the 34th minute, their first Bundesliga goal. In the 2016/2017 season she won the title of "unofficial autumn champion" with the 1st FFC Turbine Potsdam.

National team

She took part in the 2009 European Championship with the Swiss U-19 national team and reached the semi-finals with her team . A year later she took part in the World Cup with the U-20 selection . There the Swiss were eliminated in the preliminary round . In 2011 she again reached the semi-finals with Switzerland at the U-19 European Championship and was part of the Swiss team the following year, which was eliminated in the preliminary round at the U-20 World Championship in Japan .

On August 21, 2011 Wälti made her debut in the senior national team , in which she played 90 minutes in Falkirk in a 5-0 win in the international test match against the Scottish team.
