Soccer World Cup 2015 / Netherlands
This article is about the Dutch women's national football team at the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada . The Netherlands took part in the World Cup finals for the first time and benefited from the increase in the field to 24 teams. The Dutch women needed the most games of all qualified teams to qualify: 10 group games and four play-off games. The Dutch women won their first World Cup game and reached the knockout round in third place, but were eliminated from defending champions Japan. The World Cup also serves as qualification for the football tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games for the European teams . Since only the three best European teams qualify for it at the World Cup, direct qualification was missed with the round of 16.
qualification
The Netherlands met in the European qualifying Group 5 on Albania , the first time took part in the qualifiers, Belgium , Greece , Norway and Portugal . The Netherlands came in second behind the Norwegians. The direct comparison was better, but due to a draw against neighboring Belgium, two points were missing for direct qualification.
The top scorer was Vivianne Miedema , who was just 18, with 16 goals. So she scored together with the Jamaican Shakira Duncan the most goals of all teams. But Duncan had scored 14 of the 16 goals in the pre-qualification and could not qualify with their team for the finals. Miedema made her first appearance in the senior national team in the first qualifying game and already managed a hat trick in the second game . In two other games you also get three goals each. In the meantime, Miedema led the Dutch U-19 team to their first European title with six goals and was also the top scorer there. Renée Slegers scored nine goals, five of them in the 10-1 win against Albania, and Lieke Martens and Manon Melis scored seven goals each . Coach Roger Reijners used a total of 26 players in the qualification. Of these, Lieke Martens, Sherida Spitse and Mandy van den Berg were used in all 14 games. Vivianne Miedema and Manon Melis were used thirteen times. Daphne Koster , still captain in the first four games, was no longer used from the fifth game. Stefanie van der Gragt took over her position and shirt number, and Mandy van den Berg became the captain. In the game against Greece on April 5, 2014, Eshly Bakker also made her first international match and scored the last goal of the game in the last minute of the game.
By successfully qualifying for the World Cup in December 2014, the Dutch women were able to improve their position in the FIFA world rankings to their best place to date, position 11.

preparation
On February 7, 2015, the Netherlands played a friendly against Thailand in Almelo and won 7-0, with Sherida Spitse making her 100th international match. For Thailand it was the first game in Europe. In March the team will again take part in the traditional Cyprus Cup and will face World Cup participants Australia (0: 1 on March 4, with Loes Geurts making their 100th international match) and England (1: 1 on March 9) and Finland (0-0 on March 6). In third place in the group, the Dutch met the Scottish women on March 11th, who they eliminated in the World Cup qualifying playoffs, but this time lost 3-1. In April the Dutch lost a test match in Iceland on the 4th with 1: 2, but then on the 8th they won 3: 2 in Norway . On May 20, a friendly against Estonia was won 7-0 that had never been played before. At the end of the preparations, the Dutch played against World Cup participants Sweden in Toronto and lost 2-1 after leading 1-0.
Games at the World Cup

When the groups were drawn, the Dutch women were not seeded and were drawn to group A with host Canada. China and Oceania champions New Zealand were drawn as further opponents. According to their positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this was the most even group: The Netherlands were in 12th place, the Canadians in 8th, China in 16 and New Zealand in 17; Group cut = 13.25. Canada and the Netherlands had to cover the greatest distance between the second and third preliminary round venues, almost 3,600 km overland or about four hours by flight.
The record against China was negative for 10 games before the World Cup: a win in the previous game on August 24, 2011 was matched by four draws and five defeats and it could not be improved either, because the second group game against China was scored in lost in stoppage time. The Dutch had also played ten times against Canada. Again, only one was won, three ended in a draw and six games were lost. The draw in the last group game at least didn't worsen the record. Against the Oceania champions, the balance in 5 games before the World Cup was negative: one win, two draws (with a win on penalties) and two defeats. However, only the first two games were lost and with the victory in the first World Cup game, the balance was balanced.
The Dutch women qualified as one of the four best thirds in the group for the round of 16. There, on June 23, 2015 in Vancouver the team will meet defending champions Japan , the winners of Group C, against whom the Dutch have lost three times in three games - most recently in 2008 at the first edition of the Cyprus Cup in the third place have to fly from Montreal in the east to the west coast, but with 8 days they have the largest break of all round of 16 participants, opponents Japan, who played the last group game in Winnipeg , but only one day less. They also lost in the fourth meeting with the Asians and thus also missed the direct Olympic qualification. You now have to determine the third European Olympic participant in playoff games with the teams from Norway , Switzerland and Sweden , who were also eliminated in the round of 16 .
