history
The original name of the place was Vollendam . Volendam is located at the point where the small river the E or IJe flowed into the Zuiderzee in the Middle Ages . 1357 was created by damming the E by the citizens of the village of Edam Vollendam. The village was quickly settled by farmers and fishermen. Volendam has certain customs and traditions with which the village differs from the rest of the Netherlands and the population has its own dialect , the so-called Volendams . During the Reformation , the village remained loyal to the Roman Catholic Church , in contrast to the immediate vicinity . In the middle of the 20th century, Volendam is said to have had the highest number of Roman Catholic priestly ordinations per square kilometer in the Netherlands and even the highest number of missionaries per square kilometer in the world. The secularization has ended, but Volendam remains a center of Roman Catholic worship rites .
music
Volendam has been the center of its own music industry since the 1960s and the village has produced many musicians, some of whom are internationally known. This music is also known under the name Palingsound (eel sound) because of the history of Volendam as a fishing village. Well-known Volendammer musicians are: The Cats , BZN , Jantje Smit , Nick & Simon , Tol & Tol and the 3JS .
