The Cats were a Dutch pop group that enjoyed success in their homeland from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. In the early 1970s, they also had some hits in German-speaking countries.

occupation

During its successful time, the group consisted almost constantly of the following six members:

  • Cees Veerman: vocals and guitar (born October 6, 1943, † March 15, 2014)
  • Piet Veerman: vocals and guitar (born March 1, 1943)
  • Theo Klouwer: drums (* June 30, 1947, † February 8, 2001)
  • Arnold Muhren: bass guitar (born January 28, 1944)
  • Jaap Schilder: guitar and piano (born January 9, 1943)
  • Piet Keizer: guitar (1972–1975, born April 18, 1952)

Style direction

The Cats preferred to make pop music , which lived mainly on vocal harmonies and was accompanied by acoustic instruments. They borrowed from folk and country music . In the Netherlands the term paling sound (Dutch paling, eel) was coined for their musical style , u. a. because they came from the fishing village of Volendam . The George Baker Selection and BZN are further representatives of this genre .

Brief history of the band

The Cats recorded their first single ( Jukebox ) in 1965. In 1966 they had their first hit called What a Crazy Life . In 1968 they achieved their first No. 1 in the Netherlands with Lea . At the beginning of the 1970s they also had several successes in other European countries. These include the titles One Way Wind (1972 No. 1 in Switzerland ) and Let's Dance . Attempts to reach the Anglo-American market, however, were unsuccessful. The Cats kept making recordings in their homeland until 1985, when Piet Veerman left the group to embark on a solo career.

In 1994, Cees Veerman, Arnold Muhren and Jaap Schilder recorded the album Shine On with guest musicians such as Jan Akkerman , but could not build on earlier successes. After the Flemish singer Dana Winner had already released a cover version of “One Way Wind” in her mother tongue, Westenwind , solo in 1994 , she recorded the piece again in 1996 as a duet with Cats singer Piet Veerman.
