Career

societies

Sari van Veenendaal began her career at FC Utrecht as a substitute goalkeeper for Angela Christ . In 2010 she moved to league rivals FC Twente , where they instantly became Dutch champions and took part in the 2011/12 UEFA Women's Champions League , but failed in the round of 32 with two defeats at Russian champions FK Rossijanka . Twente has been playing in the newly founded BeNe League since the 2012/13 season and became Dutch champions again in 2013 and 2014. In the UEFA Women's Champions League 2013/14 , the team reached the second-best group runner-up in the round of 32, but failed there with two clear defeats (6-0 and 4-0) at Olympique Lyon . A year later , the team was directly qualified for the round of 32 and met again on a French representative, this time Paris Saint-Germain . With 1: 2 and 0: 1, the defeats were milder this time. In the 2014/15 season, they finished second behind Belgian representative Standard Liège , making Twente, the Dutch champions, also qualified for the 2015/16 UEFA Women's Champions League . From the 2015/16 season, Sari played for Arsenal and won the Cup in 2017/2018, the Cup in 2015, the League Cup in 2015 and 2017/2018 and the championship in 2018/19. For the 2019/20 season she moved to the Spanish champions Atlético Madrid .

National team

She played her first international game in the national team on March 7, 2011 against Switzerland at the Cyprus Cup 2011 . It was also nominated for the EM 2013 , but not used there. In March 2014 she was used in three games at the Cyprus Cup 2014 , u. a. the game for 9th place against Switzerland. In qualifying for the 2015 World Cup, she made two appearances in April 2014, in a 6-0 win against Greece and a 10-1 win against Albania . On November 27, 2014, the team qualified for the first time for the women's World Cup with a 2-1 win in the playoff second leg in Italy. She is also part of the squad for the Cyprus Cup 2015 , but was only used in the 0-0 win against Finland .

On April 15, 2015, she was initially appointed as one of five goalkeepers in the preliminary squad for the 2015 World Cup and then on May 10 in the final squad. Sari, who is 10 cm taller than the other two goalkeepers, was only considered the third goalkeeper. At the World Cup she was used in the group game against China , which was lost 1-0. The Dutch women reached the round of 16, where they lost 2-1 to defending champions Japan .

After that she was used more and more often, at the European Championship 2017 in her home country she was the goalkeeper and won the title with her team for the first time. In the subsequent qualification for the 2019 World Cup , she was used in seven of the eight group games and went six times without conceding a goal. Only in the 1: 2 against Norway she conceded two goals, so that first place went to the Norwegians and the Dutch had to go to the playoffs. In these, however, Loes Geurts was in goal and helped her team to get a World Cup ticket. On April 10, 2019, both were nominated for the World Cup. At the World Cup, however, only van Veenendaal - as captain - was in goal, conceded three times and only had to admit defeat to defending champions USA in the end . However, she was the only opposing goalkeeper in the USA who did not concede a goal in the first half and was then awarded the “Golden Glove” as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. The Dutch had already qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time when they reached the semi-finals .
