Mandy van den Berg (born August 26, 1990 in Naaldwijk) is a Dutch soccer player who has played for the Spanish first division club FC Valencia since 2018 and was the captain of the Dutch women's national soccer team at the 2015 World Cup , with which she won the European Championship in 2017.
Career
societies
After her youth at the hometown club RKVV Westlandia, van den Berg played for ADO Den Haag since 2007 and took part with the Hague in the 2007/08 UEFA Women's Cup , which they were eliminated in the first round. In 2012 she moved to Vittsjö GIK in Damallsvenskan, Sweden . The best placement was 6th place in the first season. In 2015 she played in Norway for the Norwegian champions Lillestrøm SK Kvinner . She then moved to England, where she first played for Liverpool FC Women and then for the women of Reading FC . In January 2018 she moved to Spain for Valencia CF.
National team
With the U-19 team of the Netherlands, she took part in qualifying for the U-19 European Women's Football Championship in 2007 . The first round was second in the group behind Norway, in the second round it was only enough to place third behind France and Ireland. In qualifying for the U-19 European Women's Football Championship in 2008 , it was enough to finish second behind Norway in the first round, and then ended up against Spain in the second round. She played her last game with the U-19 team on March 13, 2009 at a tournament in Belarus against France.
She made her first international match for the senior national team on December 15, 2010 in a friendly against Mexico . The following March she reached the final of the Cyprus Cup 2011 with her team, but lost it 1: 2 after extra time against Canada . Before the 2011 World Cup, for which the Netherlands did not qualify, the team were friendly opponents for North Korea , Canada and Germany and van den Berg was used in all three games. From autumn 2011 she played with the team in the qualification for the EM 2013, which the Dutch women finished the following summer one point behind the English women. Second place was enough for the Dutch women to qualify directly, as they achieved the most points of all runners-up in the group. Before that, they had only reached 7th place at the 2012 Cyprus Cup . In 2013 , she finished sixth. In preparation for the European Championship , she sustained a knee injury in the friendly against Australia and was therefore out of the European Championship. The Dutch women then failed in the preliminary round as bottom of the group and were the only team unable to score a goal.
From September 2013, she could then be used again in the qualifying games for the 2015 World Cup and became the team's captain in November. In addition, she took part with the Dutch in the Cyprus Cup 2014 , in which the Dutch only finished 9th. In September 2014, the World Cup qualification was finished in second place behind Norway. The Dutch women therefore had to go to the playoffs of the four best runners-up in the group and prevailed against Scotland and Italy , qualifying for the World Cup for the first time. At the Cyprus Cup 2015 , the qualifications could not be confirmed and they lost z. B. the game for 7th place against the Scottish women, who they had eliminated in the World Cup playoffs. On April 15, 2015 she was initially appointed to the provisional squad for the 2015 World Cup and then to the final squad on May 10. At the World Cup she was the captain of her team and was used in the four games, but was eliminated by a 1: 2 defeat in the round of 16 against defending champions Japan .
As the host of the 2017 European Championship , the Dutch women then had no qualification games to play, so that they only played in friendly games until the European Championship, but also at the 2017 Algarve Cup , where they won the match for 5th place with a 3-2 win to the Japanese women for their defeat at the World Cup. At the European Championship finals , she led her team onto the field as captain in the first two games, but was then replaced in the starting eleven by Stefanie van der Gragt , whereupon Sherida Spitse was appointed captain. In the quarterfinals against Sweden she was substituted on in the second half and in the final against Denmark in the fourth minute of stoppage time. After the EM, she announced that she was temporarily no longer available for the national team. The qualification for the 2019 World Cup and the World Cup then took place without them.
